I'm just learning, so I was told my an ol' quilt teacher I met at Laundry mat lol, to do a 9 patch.
The plain color will go between blocks.
I actually have 3 rows done, but no pics as of yet.I'll post again
as I get more done.

2 squares.

Looks really good to me. I love those fabrics.

Minda 05-25-2008 04:57 AM

Very nice. Can't wait to see the completed quilt. I really like your butterfly fabric.

Bevanger 05-25-2008 04:58 AM

Ok I admit  I got the fabric from Walmart. I love the fabric there AND I can afford them. I can't wait to see it done to. Its fun

Up North 05-25-2008 05:13 AM

Walmart has some decent fabric, the clerk told me alot of their $1'00 fabric is name brand but the color didn't come out right or the pattern wasn't quite right. I have gotten some beautiful stuff. I just bought some great blue yesterday for a dollar a yard. I can't afford Joann's and that is the only other place. I still have to travel 50 miles one way to get any fabric.

I hear ya. I can't afford Joanns either . I've gotten TONS of fabric at Walmart. I love it and can afford it.

If you are in walmart a lot you will see a lot of quilters come in and they buy the fabric they like by the bolt. The white on white disappears really fAST. The 4 dollar walmart fabric is the quilt store 12 dollar. I buy 12 inch pieces and you can get two wallhanging for a dollar in fabric. I love skjirts in the summer and that dollar fabric is great. Every curtain in my house is made from walmart fabric........a lot of the dollar stuff is curtain and drapery fabric. I'm with you see you in wally world :D

ccbear66 05-25-2008 05:50 AM

I think that you are doing a wonderful job. It looks to me like all of your points match and that is a good thing. Keep up the good work.

DonnaRae 05-25-2008 05:52 AM

Very pretty and sweet! Don't fret over Walmart. They have been getting good fabric in like from VIP, Quilters Choice and others. Just watch it on the dollar table. Some is so weak I think it is going to tear. Can't wait to see the quilt when you are finished. :D

Bevanger 05-25-2008 06:01 AM

Anymore I stick to the $2 ones. I buy 1/2 yard of a bunch of different one to give me a variety and build my stash. I may not use it today or tomorrow, but its there when I need it. See you all at Wally World... :)

I did buy me a BROTHER computerized sewing machine there that only lasted 3 yrs. The guy at Viking had a hard time fixing it. He said everything was bolted to Plastic. Now whether thats true or not, I don't know. But I sure loved that machine. I thought of buying another, but may a Kenmore from Sears will be better.? Sears also carries the Brother I got at WalMart. Heres a pic.... What do you all think? BROTHER OR KENMORE?

Your nine patch is great! You are well on your way!!!!

I don't know if anyone has mentoned it but in block of the month I think it is a lady named Shelly has given a couple to lessons for different blocks. Great instrucions easy to follow!

I have lots of Wal-Mart fabric. That was the only place we had for years in the town I am in to get fabric without going an hour down the road. So my stash is built with their fabric. The only one that knows will be you! The person you give the quilt to will be so excited they wont care. I have seen some of the stash I have in very expensive quilt shops.

I have the brother 6000. I love it. It is easy to sew on and does a great job.

I have two Brothers. One of them ( the cheaper one) I have put through the mill. When ever I have something that is going to be rough to sew I use it and it is a wonder machine. Never have had any problems with either of them. I also have a Kenmore older machine. I bought it used because it has a larger neck area for quilting. Again great machine. So it is a hard choice but I swear by Brother. I also have a Brother serger. So actually that is three Brother machines and never have had a problem with any of them. Maybe I should knock on wood, :-o but I do think they are great machines :!: :D

I love your 9 patch! Those fabrics are so bright and cheerful :D Can't wait to see the finished quilt! :D

My Machine is a Brother CS6000. It might be the same one I don't know. I do know it has computerized on it.
It is a cheepie I got at "Wal-Mart" when my other machine was confiscated by my daughter.

I wanted so bad to buy another Brother, this time from Sears, But Hubby said no. He was afraid I'd have the same problem as the one that just broke.

That's it. Does it look like this? (pic) I too got mine at Walmart, but when I took it to Viking to get it fixed. (top thread wouldn't pick up bobbin thread) He said it was a piece of crap  And it has a plastic body that everything is bolted to. Also whenever it gets warm it goes out of shape. It was out of time ...bobbin..... But when I got it home it worked fine. The second day of use it started clicking real bad. Like the needle was hitting something. I called him, he said he could try to realign it again, but he can't promise anything. It worked fine for 3 yrs of solid use.. I don't get it

DonnaRae 05-25-2008 10:58 AM

Well that is not either of the Brothers I have and definitly not a serger. I have the Disney Embroidery, the other is under my table in a case so I don't want to pull it out, but I think it is a 270S or D something like that. They both have the thread cassette that you put your thread in and insert in top and it automatically threads the needle. So easy. Oh, and I could hear my DH telling me what machine to get. I would tell him when he starts using it to sew he can decide which one to buy, I don't tell him which tools (well sometimes I check prices) to get! :D

DA Mayer 05-25-2008 12:05 PM

I bought my kenmore a few years ago and I really like it. I never have used a brother. I think all brands can have a dud year, if you liked your brother, I certainly would try again. I do have 4 live Brothers and they all work nicely if I ask them sweetly, none are computerized yet. I also have 3 Sisters and they sometimes work better than the Brothers.

ddrobins1956 05-25-2008 01:04 PM

Your blocks look great. You are really off to a good start there.

barnbum 05-25-2008 02:52 PM

Nice job and the fabrics look great together!

starshine 10-06-2012 10:44 AM

I think 9 patch is a perfect start block, and yours is so cute.

QM 10-06-2012 10:55 AM

Good fabric choices. That will be a delightul quilt.
I'm in about the same boat as you are on fabrics, with 5 stores, all 60-70 miles away. My first quilting machine was a lemon of a Bernina, which also lasted 3 years. I upgraded to a Janome 1600P, which is very solidly made. Dealer opened up and showed DH construction of several major brands in the store for repairs. If you are doing serious sewing and can't afford a solid new machine, I would suggest going to garage sales. Lots of good older machines sell for $25-50. IMHO, the low end machines from Walmart etc are a waste of money.

fred singer 10-06-2012 01:14 PM

very lovely 9-patch --great colors to work with.

cowgirlquilter 10-06-2012 02:38 PM

Good idea to start out with the 9 patch. You've picked beautiful colors and your blocks look great.
