What if I start over... What do you think of this layout? Remember, I want to use the pieces that were cut in the 70's without adding anything. This has all of the 11 different hexigon fabrics, and of course it isn't a finished product (just pieces laid out on my floor).

I like it, although I think I might make the center piece a different color. A piece of the dark green would make the center look like a flower. The dark blue would be okay as well. Otherwise, I think it looks great.

That is a cool idea. I still like the traditional Grandmothers flower garden too.

mom-6 03-07-2010 06:23 PM

The hexagons quilt I received as a wedding gift had a dark diamond shaped lattice with a large flower in the center and smaller ones in the surrounding smaller diamonds.
Not sure how many rounds on the center flower but the smaller ones were either one or two rounds (may have been some of both sizes). Slept under it for years, but didn't pay that much attention to the pattern (wasn't planning on quilting then either)and now it's gone with the rest of the stuff when our house burned several years ago.

Oh How did I get myself into this project???? Feeling a little trapped by my boss... ugh!

spinnergs 03-07-2010 07:50 PM

The blues and green seem like a different flower to me, love the rest of colors together

I think it is all personal preference. Your quilt looks very nice. If you want it to look more like a flower, I would recommend a yellow center. I am working on hand quilting Grandmother's flower garden with a yellow center 1930's fabric and enjoying it very much. If you want to leave the brown, that's fine too. It is what YOU like.

isnthatodd 03-08-2010 06:07 AM

I like this one. It seems much less green. Would you leave it as a hexagon, or square it up?

I gotta tell you I love it! Maybe I'm crazy but I love the bright mosaic look to it.

I really wasn't trying to make this one look like a flower like Grandmother's flower garden. I decided to go with the dark blue center so it would pull the blue more into it. I thought the green worked in this one, but the blue almost looked like it didn't go. And since they are the fabrics this lady cut out so many years ago with her 2 daughters, I thought I really needed to use all of her fabric choices.

It has been rather difficult to make since it isn't anything I would have chosen. I think it is really sweet of the daughter (my principal) to have this made for her mom. It was a project the mom had planned on making for the daughter so many years ago as an aniversary present. But it was too overwhelming and it was never made. Now the daughter has decided to give it back to her mom as a mother's day gift. Sweet, don't you think... now if I can get it done!

That is a heart breaking story! I used to make porcelain dolls for years. I don't have many left, but the few I have are dear to my heart. It would really crush me it they were lost through a fire or broken in a move or something.

nativetexan 03-08-2010 01:53 PM

that's great too. what ever you do to use them all up should work just fine. nice of you to do.

stitchinwitch 03-08-2010 01:57 PM

Are you going to hand piece?? It will be really gorgeous!

No, I don't know how... but I wouldn't have time either. It needs to be done by Mother's Day and I work full time.

knlsmith 03-08-2010 02:15 PM

i like this one better than the other grouping, too. The first one was a little hard to look at and this one is actually pretty.

Andii 03-08-2010 02:43 PM

I like this layout the best so far. Do you think you could use the extra brown you've got laid out on the left to make some kind of trailing stem? Maybe the green could be placed as leaves...I'm new here and haven't even made a quilt yet so I'm only going by looks. I might try to use the extra red to make a few more flowers and connect them with the trailing browns as stems. Maybe that's easier said than done, I'm sure it is.

I admire you for trying to do this. It's hard enough to flesh out your own vision sometimes let alone someone else's that doesn't match your taste. Good luck. I'll look forward to seeing it finished.

PS My name is Andi.

I like your layout. I'm not a big fan of "grandmothers garden" but I love hexagons.

DeniseB 03-08-2010 04:42 PM

I agree with Dixiechunk. I like it like this.

knlsmith 03-12-2010 04:11 AM

so do you have any updates? Pics? I am really curious to see how it is going for you.

Stummel 03-12-2010 04:34 AM

What about just making different coloured rows, sort of like a rainbow? May be less intense then.

I can only work on my quilts on the weekends, so I don't have much done. I have the first 5 rows in so far (through the green row). I changed the center to the dark blue so the blue row might pull in and blend better.

It's starting to grow on me now. It might actually turn out pretty nice. ;-)

I completely understand. I've had extra time cuz work has been slow. But pretty soon it'll be 50 and 60 hours a week. ;)

Jingle 03-13-2010 07:25 PM

I'm sure however you put it together will be much appreciated and I liked the first one you showed. When time is limited you can't take alot of time playing around with it.
Good for you for doing this.

stitchinwitch 03-14-2010 04:59 AM

Am I missing another picture?? I saw one gorgeous on of layed out hex's - is there another?

Tippy 03-14-2010 05:09 AM
