new parrots!

these buggars are not sewn down yet. they are black palm cockatoo's. In the wild when mating season is approaching, the male builds the nest usually in the top of a hallowed out tree. He keeps a piece of wood that he uses as a drumstick and bangs it on the tree to attract a mate!

Wow, they are gorgeous. I see loads of pins so am assuming this is not fusible applique. Kudos to you for such complex work with turned under edges. Your wood fabric is fabulous.

mike'sgirl 01-01-2015 02:25 PM

As a parrot owner, that is a gorgeous quilt!

Going to be great!

Berkie 01-01-2015 03:52 PM

it is fused with ultra bond lite. I had used that on the hyacinth one I did recently & although I really don;t like the stiffy feel, the misty fuse was not working for me either. I think because I do soo much manhandling while twisting & turning that I was loosening the misty fuse. I was having a similar problem with the heat & bond lite, but not as bad so I stuck a few pins in just in case as I have 3 other tops to finish off before I can sew these guys down.
P.S...I do have parrots ;)

Oh, it is absolutely breathtaking! Love the back story, too!

Berkie 01-04-2015 03:43 AM

Yes, I too have parrots, that is what got me into making the quilts. There was nothing really on the market besides some small machine applique items or items made using parrot printed fabric. Right now I am so swamped with orders, I have 2 hyacinth macaw quilts to finish (a pattern I will be retiring once I finish these 2 as it's so hard to do!!) 1 36 patch with multiple species, (I make those in a 24 to 54 patch) 1 umbrella cockatoo quilt with a beach theme, the black palm quilt, a quilt with mini toucan's and a quilt using about 15 of 1 girls personal birds!

I have 9 african greys, 1 very old yellow napes amazon (he's pushing 70!) 2 senegals I used to have a scarlet macaw, but lost her to PDD, a very nasty parrot disease with no test, let alone a cure.

Berkie you HAVE to post parrot pics in a thread I started. Show me your zoo!!

Ada Shiela 01-15-2015 01:35 PM

Berkie, cockatoos are my favourite birds and this one is beautiful. This is a fascinating bird; here in Oz we had an ABC documentary "Parrots of Australia" on tv, which I had to buy. We have the Carnaby Cockatoo, red, yellow and occasionally white tailed (which are endangered) visiting in trees nearby, I feel privileged to see them even if they are noisy and destroy trees. I look forward to seeing the finale.
