I thought I'd post what I came up with for my fat quarters. My criteria for shelving was that I wanted something that was not too deep and didn't take up much of a footprint in the room. My sewing room doubles as a guest bedroom with a full bed in it. So, I have to be careful to keep the room presentable and fairly organized. I've been digging around in plastic bins for fabric and driving myself insane. I was spending more time trying to find fabric than quilting! The room faces south so gets a ton of light. I didn't want open shelving as I'm worried that the light will fade the fabric over time. So, I went to Ikea over the weekend and found several things that would work. Many of the shelves were open would need separate doors-at an added expense. I found these $5.99 each. DVD/CD wall mounted racks.

I measured the space behind the door in the bedroom and they would just fit depth-wise and I thought would work great. If anything the door would bang on some overhanging fabric, not the frame since there's a door stopper at the bottom of the wall.

Unfortunately they don't have shelves so the fabric would fall through. I thought to myself do I pay up to $60 each for shelves or spend $6 each and retro fit it to work for my needs? So, I bought 4 racks and headed to Lowes where I bought birch plywood and screw in cupholders. I used a jigsaw to cut plywood as long as the racks and then shelves to fit each level. Then I predrilled holes using the rack as the template, put in drywall hangers in the wall, screwed in the racks and attached the cupholders and shelves.

To be clear this is just for quarters or eighths. Any of my yardage is still in drawers. I know the shelves aren't centered because I plan to add more rows to the left and right as needed :twisted: I also still have some quarters to add and some to rearrange. Hubby was very proud of me and said it looked like wall art. The best part of this retro fit is that this door nook is shaded throughout the day and the fabric won't become discolored. I think I should pat myself on the back;>

The door stop behind the door keeps the door from hitting the baseboard and gives 4 3/4" behind the door. The CD rack is 4 inches deep. When I push the door towards the wall it does barely bump the fabric which overhangs the shelf a little. I could fold the fabric more tightly to avoid that, but honestly you'd have to throw the door open against the wall to do that. It's not noticeable. Hope this makes sense.

Great idea. I am planning to reoragnize my sewing room soon. It is a disaster right now.

Now I just need to manufacture a retro-fit kit and call it "Fat Quarter Stash Rack" and raise the price a huge amount...like anything else made for quilters :roll:

Lovely idea! I had been using two regular towers that were CD size but my paints needed a home and then DH looked really sad about where he could store his screws and nails containers so since I had already broken up the pair, I gave the other one to him.

Now my fat quarters are in shoe boxes :-( I wish we had an Ikea!

The cuphooks are to support the shelves and fabric.

MY saw. I got a craftsman chest/toolbox for Christmas and love it. My husband is not handy at all. I do all the building/fix its and use all the tools. I should have been born a man!
