But it turned out so cute.

Kwhite, How about a mini iron and small ironing pad next to your sewing machine (if you have room). I do this with my paper piecing work and it is really fast and a big help. Just be sure to have a prop or a little container of some sort to stick the head of the iron in to be safe.
I like your block!

RedGarnet222 06-26-2009 11:11 AM

I was going to suggest a ironing pad too. I have one I use with my clover mini iron or little travel iron when I appilque that also works for quick pressing blocks near the machine.

Your block is adorable! That little kitty sewing is perfect for a person who loves sewing. I have never tried the crumbs method. I have done the crazy patch quilting, though. This looks very simular to that. Is it?

k3n 06-26-2009 11:59 AM

Have you got an Ikea near you K? I got a mini folding ironing board there a while back for around 5 dollars of your money. When I'm doing stuff like this, I set it up along side my machine.

love them pink little bloomers!

thismomquilts 06-27-2009 08:28 AM

so cute

That Kitty block is really cute.

I have two denim shirts that my grandmother embroidered for me years ago that I could never part with. I decided to cut the embroidery pieces off the shirts and use a crazy block or crumb method to put them into quilt blocks. I have been thinking about this for a while, waiting until I found the right thing and then I was given a book called Cotton Crazy Quilts just last week by my dear MIL.

The book gives some ideas for the center shapes--pentagons and so forth so I think it will work. Now to get some other stuff out of the way so I can try it.

I really appreciated the tute link because it is so clear. Many thanks!!

Thanks for the ironing board tip. I'm going to check into that.

I think a small ironing pad is more useful beside the sewing machine. I saw one today at Joanns in the Fons & Porter area.

barnbum 06-27-2009 03:17 PM

Oh my gosh--that is adorable!!!

How can you say that kwhite?! It is awesome!! I love it! You did a great job!! I'm envious and if you are still w/the yuck on it...send those kitties right on over here!LOL Skeat

zkosh 06-30-2009 02:17 PM

You are probably right and that is what I have been using. I just need to get it closer to my machine! :-)

SaraSewing 06-30-2009 07:18 PM

kwhite - the blocks you are making are great. Good job.
K3n, Thanx for reminding me where the tute was - I'd misplaced that link. I have a big bag (that's getting bigger) to try scrap blocks. Someday! Or when the bag won't hold anymore??

kwhite 06-30-2009 08:02 PM

I did cut 3.5 inch pieces of paper and found it to be easier to decide where to cut when I had that. So I just need to relax and stop over thinking the blocks. I am just so OCD about bits and pieces and want not to waste a thread.

Carol W 07-01-2009 10:56 AM

That is a very cute block.

Love the block and the embroidered kitty block is adorable. I think you did an awesome job.

K, thanks for the link, now I have something to do with those tiny scraps I don't know what to do with.

I am a relative quilting novice and have never heard of crumbing. Does it have to do with the beautiful border around your embroidery? That border frames your work beautifully!

deedum 07-02-2009 01:35 PM

I love it, but then I love scrappy!

Yes crumbing is the method of making the scrappy blocks around the center. You just take any crumb of fabric you have and sew it to another then another until you have a big enough piece to square up into a block.

#1piecemaker 07-02-2009 02:25 PM

Ahhhh now, that is so cute. How could you not just love it? I do. It's eye candy!

kwhite 07-02-2009 02:49 PM

I like the results. It was the making of the blocks I didn't care for. I overthink these simple things.

deedum 07-02-2009 02:57 PM

why thank you! I made the dress and the little bloomers to match for my co-worker's one year old daughter. Fun to make.

Crissie 07-02-2009 03:33 PM

What a darling quilt block. I really like it!

Suse 07-02-2009 04:18 PM

Very cute!

I have one of those padded squares on my sewing table and I use that for small things and single squares. It saves on the trips to the board.

I know exactly what you mean k....I'm a little tooo obsessive to be able to work that randomly..I make it really hard  Yours turned out soo cute though!

Mousie 07-05-2009 05:33 AM

I love the kitty, and am going to get myself, one of those mini irons. :D

I NEVER have time for that kind of sewing. I admire those who can do miracles with tiny scraps -- actually any kind of scraps.

sdeaaz 07-05-2009 03:48 PM

What is crumbing....?? never heard that term... quilter1234

kwhite 07-05-2009 04:32 PM

Here is a lesson in Crumbing.

kwhite, thank you very much for the lesson... I have it saved and will try it sometime to use up my scraps.. quilter 1234

Your crumbs turned out great k! I really love the embroderded [sp] kitty. I like crumb quilting when I get to much going and need to do something mindless for awhile. Show us what it looks like when you get finished.

kwhite 07-07-2009 05:12 PM

Oh I am sure I will.
