Not a quilt but sewing-related

And IMHO, absolutely stunning! Last night on "Antiques Roadshow", they went to the Philadelphia Museum of Art & looked at this picture. I love B & W photographs anyway, but this one just took my breath away. I really want a copy of this print for my sewing studio (which is done in B & W anyway). This is a picture (taken around 1920, I think) of Georgia O'Keefe's hands done as part of a series by her husband, Alfred Steiglitz. I believe the exact name of it is "Hands with Thimble". I know this copy is sort of sepia-tonied but the original looked to be B & W. Like I said, this isn't a quilt per se but I think it's appropriate for this thread. Do you love it or what?

I think I posted that picture upside-down. Actually, I think the print is flipped (the writing at the bottom looks backwards to me). Let's try this again.

Beautiful....I love black & white or sepia....coloured photographs don't seem to have as much depth somehow.

Very Meaningful....................

kat13 06-09-2012 06:33 AM

You could still print it and frame it, or print it on fabric sheets and make a wallhanging....

The hands are beautiful. I wonder if Georgia O'keefe was left handed? So MANY artists are. Since she has her thimble on her left hand, I'll bet she was. Her hands were so thin and pretty. Beautiful picture! ALERT Nope the thimble is on her right hand. I found another pic that shows that it is on her right hand.

It's awesome...but...

I thought it was Interesting to see the thimble on the left hand, the opposite hand from the needle, rather than the ring finger of the hand that is pushing the needle. Maybe I'm using my thimble wrong?

Awesome!!!

Mariposa 06-11-2012 09:20 AM

Neat picture!

Are you going to ask the museum to sell you a print of that photograph? Or are you going to make a print of the photograph you took of it? Please let us know.

Jammin' Jane 09-10-2012 05:37 PM

Looks awesome! Thanks for sharing! :)

Since the thimble is not on the hand holding the needle and there apparently is no thread in the needle, and unless that is leather and not fabric the needle is unusually large, I would say this is a beautifully staged photograph. I wonder if she could actually sew or mend? She lived much of her life in New Mexico and probably had maids to do that work while she painted that it would not be unusual if she did not sew or mend herself.
