I just received my OBW book!! I am so excited to make these blocks! Turns out it is pretty easy once the fabric is lined up, but I had a time of lining it up bc one side of the fabric wasn't a perfect match to the other side so they are a touch off. Still, I really enjoyed the entire process and seeing the different design each one makes. I should have cut them smaller, then I would have had more of a variety, but it's a learning process, right?

Thanks to all of you who have made these and told me about the book!! I would have never known otherwise. Thanks for looking.

Here is a dumb question, what is OBW?

rb. 10-17-2009 10:30 AM

Mountainquilter, it stands for One Block Wonder.

ctquilter 10-17-2009 11:16 AM

Your blocks are beautiful! Love the fabric.

wvdek 10-17-2009 11:21 AM

Gosh those are pretty! I still can't believe how many different looks you can get out of a piece of fabric.

Moonpi 10-17-2009 11:28 AM

Great job - I think the chickadee is the set I like best.

Ninnie 10-17-2009 11:29 AM

I love those, the material was so pretty and they turned out great!

Iluv2quilt 10-17-2009 12:03 PM

Thank you! Now I have to afford 4 - 6 more yards of fabric. I looked at another fabric I have earmarked for OBWs and figured out that I was trying to match the bird fabric going the wrong way. So the next ones should match up more accurately. Glad I saw the mistake!!

sewnsewer2 10-17-2009 01:39 PM

Oooo, very pretty! I haven't tried it yet.

gaigai 10-17-2009 01:39 PM

Suzic those are beautiful!!! Great job!

Rhonda 10-17-2009 01:48 PM

Suzi you did good again!! I love the look you get with this method. Love the fabric you chose for this. Looking forward to seeing it done!

Love the blocks and the fabric you choose! Great job!

Iluv2quilt 10-17-2009 06:21 PM

Thank you all, I thought it was really pretty fabric too. I just bought a different fabric, one that I could take with me on my trip and hand sew. I was able to get 72 blocks cut out of it. It's black with pink and cream flowers with gold lines on it. That should keep me busy while my Gbaby and DIL are sleeping and DS is at work. :D :D

Esqmommy 10-17-2009 06:25 PM

Suzi- totally pretty. What's the name of the bird fabric? i collect it and want to get some!

barnbum 10-17-2009 06:32 PM

Very pretty! I like the bird fabric, too.

kay carlson 10-18-2009 07:34 AM

I think your blocks are delightful. Yup, I hope to make OBW a handsewing project after the first of the year when I retire. I have read - somewhere - perhaps on this board - that the right hand side of the printed fabric is usually in alignment. Some people just use only the right hand side after cutting the fabric in half lengthwise.

In any case, your work is beautiful. What size triangles are you cutting? You mentioned the triangles for the bird print were large. Have you found an optimum size for your second endeavor?

Much happiness to you and your family :)

I'm hooked on this style of quilt making. I've made 4 so far and have bought more fabric for more, of which I don't know if I want to admit how many. One thing I really like, is that they can be assembled so quickly. I cut repeats, strips and pieced half hexagons together in 4 1/2 hours. I too, enjoy how much the original fabric can appear so different, with this method. I generally make art quilts and this method really fits the need for playing with color and pattern.

fireworkslover 10-18-2009 08:44 AM

It's not hard to line up your fabric. Just pick a spot where there's a sharp point in the pattern, one that's easily identified, that's where you stick the pin thru on each layer. Also, don't wash your fabric, but do iron it to get out any wrinkles as well as the fold from being on the bolt. If you pin carefully, the fabric strips stay alligned. Follow the directions in the book "One Block Wonders" by Maxine Rosenthal, and you won't be disappointed.

Such pretty fabric....those little birds are so cute. The OBW sure makes for some beautiful blocks.

Wel, well, well. I think those plum blocks are just plummy! Will you use English paper piecing to put these blocks together, now?

SulaBug 10-18-2009 12:36 PM

Suzi,
You are such an inspiration, this afternoon, to me!! :D
