beautiful!!...great job and pattern.

debcavan 06-13-2012 03:10 AM

Oh, I am having a real hard time thinking of the total number of half square triangles you made. That certainly was a labor of love and it is gorgeous. I would say it is even more gorgeous in person. Congrats

luci4 06-13-2012 04:09 AM

Beautiful quilt.

joycet 06-13-2012 05:09 AM

Your quilt is gorgeous!!! I love my 301. In fact I loved it so much I bought another one. The "new" one is in a cabinet. The other is portable. You mentioned quilting it on a short arm machine. What kind do you have? I have a Viking set up and really don't care for it. Maybe because I haven't used it so much???

bibi 06-13-2012 05:20 AM

Awesome. Your quilt is beautiful. What a wonderful idea to use toile (spelling?). I have some dutch blue toile that I've had for years and never could figure out a pattern for it, but, now I have a great inspiration. Thank you for sharing.

Well, since so many of you asked how many pieces, the total is 1,236 pieces. Just the center with all the HST's was 1,224, and then 12 for the border strips. Someone mentioned it as an idea to use for their red work squares, but the large squares in the centers are not one piece. Each diagonal group of HSTs has a large triangle of the toile sewn to each side of it to make the square block. Then when you sew the blocks together the triangles come out looking like solid squares.

I have a BabyLock Quilters Choice Professional on a New Joy frame. It's OK, because I can certainly quilt my own quilts. However, because the BabyLock only has a 9-1/2" harp, my quilting space for most quilts is only 4-1/2" to 5-1/2" depending on the size of the quilt. I just finished a smallish quilt that I was able to use a 5-1/2" pattern on, but larger quilts like the red one I have to stick to a 5" pattern because of the bulk of the quilt on the roller as I get toward the end. It's kind of frustrating, because I would love to be able to do whole block motifs, but I can't. I do a lot of pantographs because of this rather than custom or heirloom type quilting. But it's OK until I can afford something else in the future.
