Oder than dirt star quilt
 

Another quilt made by my mom back at least in the 70's. In those days they cut out each piece that was used to make the star. Then sewing them back together, you can only imagine how it could grow and stretch because of the bias cuts! Well, after much thought, I stippled the star and did a grid on the outer plaid sections. I think the plaid was once a sheet! With all the great colors on the front, we had a bit of fun with the purple polka dots on the backing. Gotta love the fact that they used any and all fabric they had back in the day! Fun times and another memory we can smile about! Thanks MOM,

I remember my Mother using this pattern for quilts. She made all 10 of her kids one. As you said, the diamonds was cut maybe 2 or 3 layers at a time.

Your mom had a great eye for color! I wouldn't have thought to use the blue/yellow plaid with a lone star but it totally works!

came out very pretty. the background is a bit buggie on my eyes though. I remember making a star this way. cutting each piece out first and sewing it individually together.

It's a real treasure from the 70's and will always remind you of your mom. What a great thing to have it finished.

Well, you say that "in those days" they cut all the pieces separately. I have to confess that - being an ignorant newbie - that's exactly what I did about 4 or five years ago with a lone star for a baby quilt! I wasn't even aware that bias could be a problem :o I hand pieced and hand quilted it. And I did the same with fabrics as your mom a few decades earlier: There was not one piece of "real" quilting fabric on it (didn't have that back then). It was all cotton, but part of it was from old bedding, part from a table cloth, part from a shirt... you get the picture! Turned out quite nice, though, and was much loved by the recipient!

Very pretty. In the 70s and before all quilt patches had to be cut by hand. No rotary cutters or mats, rulers we have now. I have made three quilts using squares from that time. My Daughter has used lots of the squares in several scrappy quilts.
Very surprising how many were accurately cut.

You're really brave to use a plaid that way. Wow-ee! But it really makes a unique quilt and the colors make it just look happy!
