Old Top Bought at Auction
2 Attachment(s)
This quilt top was bought at an auction by a lady and she wanted me to finish and repair it. It was quite a challenge, to say the least :) . It was pieced using polyester, jaquard, cotton, and who knows what else. It as was sewn by hand and machine, and some of the seams were over an inch wide and some just didn't even exist. So lots of holes and lots of puckers.
She didn't want me to fix it to be perfect because she loved the character of it. So I fixed the huge holes and puckers and quilted it with a semi dense pattern to help hold it together for years to come. It is definitely not square and I also had to trim about 4 to 8 inches off all the sides to straighten it up a little bit. It is still huge. I delivered it to her office and got the biggest hug! Talk about a great feeling. One of her daughter works in the same department as my hubby and was just gushing about how she gets to have it when her mother passes (a long time from now lol) and how she just loved it. Thank you for looking. |
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Just another reason to not freak out if your stitches/corners, etc. aren't perfect, someone will love it no matter what!

I've had a hand in two such quilts. One was over a thousand pieces in 9 patches, all polyester. Her daughter-in-law asked me to help her tie it so it would be finished. I don't remember what she did with it, but it was very pretty.
The other was a quilt that my tenant's brother had used for years and really needed work. I took off the old back, found a new one, straightened the edges and put on a binding. Then my tenant, the sister-in-law and I tied it. It so resembled the one in the picture, it is eerie. It had the same rows of colors changing to other colors in the other rows. But it will last for many more years. Polyester never wears out. I hope the one you worked on doesn't either. |
Well done! I'm sure the quilt will now enjoy a long and happy life with people who appreciate it.

It's a wonderful feeling to save an old top and make someone else really happy, all at the same time. The top is beautiful, but I know it was a challenge. It's great that you were willing to take it on and have the ability to handle it. Some how that quilt top found the right people!
