First off, thanks so much to everyone yesterday for their comments and encouragement about my first wonky block.
I sat down to do another one last night and ended up with four 12.5" blocks from my stash. I love these things! They are totally scrap busting. I haven't even made a dent in my scrap pile and I've got these 4 awesome blocks. I like the ones with the Hedgehogs in the centre the best, but it's a learning process and I'm just going to keep on making them. I was thinking about putting some white sashing around them once I have enough for a quilt to tie them all together and give them some space from each other. |
These are really cute, and look like a great way to use some of the long narrow strips left over from other projects.

Those are so cute. I love the wonky look of them. Keep it up.

Beautiful way to use up scraps! Thanks for sharing with us!
May I suggest "quilting in sections" so you can use your fancy stitches on your machine to quilt the blocks. Look at this link: http://www.quilterscache.com/H/howto...neatatime.html |
I totally don't have any fancy stitches on my machine, it's a 30 year old pfaff!
But thanks for the link, I'm going to read up on it for sure. I was also thinking about making this a project where I practice my FMQ skills (or lack thereof!). |
Are you doing this the foundation piecing method?
|
Great blocks. They would work well for me to use the strips that I cut crooked when I am not supposed to (lol)

I'm such a newbie that I don't even know what that is! Basically I start with a square, trim off a side or two to give it some "wonk" and then attach a strip to the top and bottom, trim the ends of the strips off to match the sides, and then sew a strip to each side. Then I "wonk" the new block again and repeat the process. Like this: http://www.quiltdad.com/2009/09/quil...n-squares.html |
Wonky blocks are fun!!!
I started a wonky block table runner and keep forgetting to finish it! I need to get on that this weekend... Til then.. I'm going to enjoy looking at yours! |
They are sooooooo cute!!! I want to make some!! :D
Thanks for sharing!!! |
Cool cool cool!
Crumb blocks only bigger! |
Hmmm. Thanks for the link. It would seem to make more sense to have a paper pieced or foundation pattern. It sure looks like a lot of wasted fabric in the cuts? Very cute, though.
|
I love those!! Keep going! The hedgehogs are adorable.
|
That's a terrific use of scraps!!!

What I love is that you don't need to buy a pattern or a book.It looks like so much fun. I have a bunch of purple fabric I bet would look really neat in wonky blocks. Thanks for the idea.
|
Great job! I think you have great taste in fabric ...as I own one or two of the ones you have there..hehe.
|
What a great way to use up scrapes, thanks for sharing.
|
Oh those are really cool! I love them!
|
Nice Job!
|
I love the hedgies! :D
|
I love the look great blocks. I may make some my self.
|
Love the wonky blocks. I have a pattern "somewhere" that I got free off the "infernet" as my son would say. Been intending on doing that someday; may come sooner rather than later, now.
|
I really like your wonky blocks! I have other projects going now, but I want to try these soon. I actually don't have much in the way of general scraps to work with, but I have a lot of Christmas fabric scraps. I am not sure I would like a wonky block made from Christmas fabric, but at least I can practice with them and see what I get. Thanks for sharing.
|
fun, aren't they? ;-)
|
I think this would be really fun, especially when you have lots
of fabric stash to choose from--as I do. Probably I will add this to my list of techniques to do. |
I love your wonky scrap blocks. I have been trying to use up my scraps too. I have made wonky blocks and strip quilts. They are so much fun.
|
I just want to say thanks to everyone. I know this style of piecing isn't for everyone, esthetically, but I am really having fun with it. I finished off another one today and my 5 year old daughter is sitting on the floor in my sewing room, picking out scraps. She is going to help me "design" the next one.
