I don't do applique very much because it just takes SO LOOOONNNNGGG!!! All the rest of the quilt blocks are done, have been done for a couple of weeks, and everything is waiting on this block getting done.
Just a bunch of berries left to do and I'll do them in a yo-yo style with a cardboard template. Something I did with the stems is use fusable though you can't tell. I made the stems using pressing bars so they're actually two layers of fabric. I then cut tiny strips of fusable, fused them to the background fabric, then fused the stems in place. It's just enough to hold them in place while I hand sew them without the bother of pins. |
Very nice. I need to learn to applique. I have a quilt that has a lot of insects on different blocks that I want to try, but need experience first.
My gosh I can't wait to see this finished!
Looks great Pam
Great job!!

I find that very interesting that you used the fusible to secure the stems.....smart! Did you needleturn the rest of the things? Whatever you did, it sure looks nice. But yes, applique is time consuming......beautiful, but time consuming.....
I figured that since there are two layers, and the fusible is attached to the bottom layer, that it wouldn't be obvious at all and it's not. I used tiny strips of fusible, maybe 1/8" to 1/4" wide and maybe 1/2" long and spaced them out over the area. I just wanted to hold it in place.
I think it will be a good way to do the berries. They will be gathered into a circle and the fusible will be on the back side of them. I used a mix of needle turn and basting. I turned under and basted the large pieces like the vase and the birds. |
It's coming nice
I just love this pam! You are doing the most fantastic job!
Nice, you brave girl!! I'm doing machine applique in small quantities, but not hand applique....yet. Great job!!
You get a gold star for patience! In case you ever need to do more circles, you may want to get the "perfect circles" set. They are made out of mylar and make circles so much easier.
I love this, it has such a lot of charm, would be fantastic in a quilt, I can visualise it all finished and quilted. Lovely work.

Cute quilt block. I love the small print you used in the back-round. I did a large leaf quilt in applique and I did it all by hand.It seemed to go fast and was vey simple to do. What made it nice was it was 4 large leaves on a large single colored block. I used all colored prints for the leaves and set them on white blocks. Then I used gren for the sashing and border.Good applique to practice on. Not near as hard as some I've done. Quick quilt to do.
That's a great technique......I've put that in my mental box for later.....thanks....:)
Your applique block looks great! I know how tedious it is to cut fusible web for the stems. If you ever decide to do more applique you might want to get basting glue.
There is a product called Glue-Baste made by Roxanne Products Co. You can find it in well stocked LQS's and on the web. It is a small 2oz. bottle with a needle thin top for applying very small dots of glue. :D |
Cute block. Kinda looks Pennsylvania Dutch.
That is so cute. Applique is so beyond my abilities. Great job.
I didn't think of using glue and I should have. I have some glue that I use for raw edge machine applique and for attaching binding.
I've heard of the circles but haven't looked into it yet. I save those thin, hard cardboard pieces that come with charm packs and use them for templates. I got 7 of the berries done tonight, maybe I can get it done tomorrow and get the rest of the top sewn together. :-P |
Very pretty I like it!
Great job--I would love to see it with all of its companion blocks.
Very nice!

Center with companions. :-P
Just two more rows of finished blocks to sew together! |
Looks good to me :) I too wait to see the completed piece and then the whole quilt !! I have been watching as you have created up to this point.
oh my! I did not look at the last page! wow you did good! :)
Hi, great job! I can't wait to do mine. I love applique. There sooo many patterns on the quilt sites that I don' know which one to so first. So, I do the block of the month ones. Neat
Beautiful Pam! I love those fabrics the more I see them - so fresh and pretty! And your piecing always looks so crisp and flat. I must check out the glue as well, I've just done some appliqué of trailing vines made with the Clover gadget at 1/4" wide and even though I have the tiny appliqué pins, then do get in the way!
I too love the look of applique and will try anything to help it along. Those tiny applique pins are better than normal ones but it's still a pain to pin everything. Glue has got to be better. The fusable worked pretty good for the doubled fabric pieces.
I use heavy spray starch after washing and drying. It really helps with the piecing. |
wow! It's gorgeous! It's been so exciting to see it coming together! Keep us updated on the finished product!
The top is looking very nice, pam. :D
The whole quilt looks beautiful! Love your choice of fabrics!
