K3n - I'm not sure why the fabric wouldn't be just as accurate on the "far" side of the bolt as on the "near" side. We tested this out on some of our fabrics and she was right. We were not able to get an accurate layering of the 6 cuts of fabric. When we pinned them together they were off by small amounts. Now, that could be just the choice of fabrics, but we all had very different stuff. She said if we needed extra blocks we could fussy cut them instead of using the layering method. This technique does use an enormous amount of fabric, but it can always be used in another project.
Maksi - yes, this is the Stack & Whack method of forming blocks. It is really so easy once you get past the fear of ripping your fabric. I hate that sound. I have the book by Bethany Reynolds and would like to get others of hers. I'm working on other stuff right now so won't get back to the blocks till this weekend. :) |
Gorgeous blocks! Can't wait to see the whole quilt!

Beautiful blocks. This is going to be a beautiful quilt.
|
I love your blocks! I really want to do one of those....perhaps in the coming year. For fabric repeat like yours, how much did you buy for the quilt?
sewlady |
That is beautiful fabric! I just finished cutting the triangles for my first OBW.
|
Way to go Gai! I can't wait to see what it looks like, I hope you took a picture of the original fabric. can we see, huh? can we?
|
Let me get a few blocks sewn together and then I'll start a thread. And I still have lots of the fabric.
|
take lots of pictures, I love watching them go together. I still have two prints that I bought specifically for it, and have found a few others in my stash that I wish I had more of as I think they would work up well.

Overlander---you picked beautiful fabric to do your kaleidoscope quilt with. How many blocks do you have to do for a queen size?
I am making a quilt like his for my niece for her college graduation next Spring. |
Hi Marcia - I will need to make 37 blocks for a queen, then adding borders to make it hang over the edge of the bed far enough. I like BIG quilts. :) So far I have only 7 done, but I've been working on other things to get them finished so I can get back to this one.
|
soooooooo beautiful!! ooooooohing and ahhhhhhhhhinng over this!!!
|
Hi Sewlady - I purchased 6 meters of fabric but was originally going to do the pinwheel kaliedescope. That is what the book called for. Then I saw the OBW Stack & Whack and decided I liked it better. Problem was it only gave directions for a double. The instructor said 6 meters would be lots as long as I don't make any mistakes. That includes the borders. So I should be okay.

That's really pretty. How the heck do you gals line the fabric up to get exact looking triangles??? Don't answer that--my head is too full to understand anyway. I'll just enjoy yours!! :D

I got to work on my quilt again today. Got more blocks done and added the black to fit them together. It is starting to shape up.
More blocks, playing with layout The first few blocks just to see what it will look like |
Love, Love, Love your blocks...they are like the Kaleidescope class we had at our monthly quilting group last Wed. Good job. Isn't this block fun and so inspiring as no block is the same.

This was the last day of class for this quilt. I got all my central hexagons finished (32) and started on the outer hexagons (14). Then all I have to do is the partial piecing and the borders. It will take a while to finish but is looking very good.
Most of the central hexagons done Two of the outer hexagons attached. This will float the central ones before adding the borders. |
Very nice! I thought it was just ME when I had difficulty matching up the pieces from "the other side" of the bolt.
|
That is gorgeous. What will the final shape be?
|
This will hopefully be a queen size quilt. I started with a double size pattern 79 x 102 and will be adding bigger borders to make it about 88 x 112 or there abouts. :)
|
Overlander: Do you have an UNCUT piece of the fabric you used to make your Kaleidescope/Hex blocks? I would love to see it before you cut it. All your hex blocks are gorgeous but the "starfish" one really draws my attention. I also really like your white and black (?) fabric. It's really attractive in your quilt. What a piece of work/art you are creating. Good job.

Hi Overlander. Your blocks are beautiful. I especially love the black triangles, they make each block stand out. Love that look.

I guess I should have posted the fabric with the first pictures :)

I love the fabric you chose....gorgeous. Thank you for showing us the uncut fabric so we can get an idea of how each of the blocks got to be the way they turned out...I love this Kaleidescope and find that I am now looking at fabric and COUNTING THE REPEATS AND CHECKING TO SEE IF I THINK IT WOULD MAKE A GREAT KALEIDESCOPE BLOCK! As someone else said, this block or technique is addictive. Thanks for sharing.

My blocks are done and the floating border blocks are complete too. I've laid everything out and numbered it so I can piece it in the right order. Whew, I've sewed my fingers to the bone the last 2 days. :) But, the end is in sight!
Labeled for sewing still missing 2 side pieces, but this is the layout |
IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL!!

OMG - this is absolutely stunning. I love the black inserts (seperators) and the black and white border fabric. Each of your bocks are gorgeous. I've had fabric for ages now, just waiting for all these Christmas projects to be done :)...then off I go on this journey :) :)
I hear these are addictive and I can definitely see why. GREAT JOB!!! Thanks for sharing your progress. |
That looks awesome. I love that fabric you used for the blocks. Sooo pretty. :D :D :D
|
Looking really good! It does float!
|
This is very pretty. Is this type of quilt machine pieced or hand sewn? Thanks.
|
Ooo I love how you are designing this! The black looks fantastic to showcase the individual OBWs, never thought of it!! Thanks, I just started to make these, having done about 50 by hand now.
Can't wait to see this one complete with the borders and all. Very Nice!! :D |
These things are gorgeous, yours and everybody else's! I guess I better keep practicing sewing strips so someday I can sew without weaving all over the place, and then I can try something like this! Thanks for sharing!

You are certainly one of the most prolific quiltmakers on this board. All beautiful and love your color combos.
