I starch the fabrics well before cutting so there is no getting out of shape and they stay where they're supposed to. :)

That's very interesting. Does that mean you have to wash the quilt after it's all finished? Would be very interested to hear how the steps come together to achieve such a fine result.

I pre-wash everything except pre-cuts like jelly rolls. I use either spray starch from a can or I buy a jug and mix it 50/50 with water in a spray bottle.

I spray every bit of fabric fairly well, not soaking wet though, when I iron it. It comes out amazingly wrinkle-free and has a stiffness that is at least as much as, usually more, than new, unwashed fabric. The only bad aspect is that it can make rulers slide more too so using some sandpaper dots is a good idea on the back of rulers.

It just goes together so well because the fabric isn't floppy and wanting to bunch or twist. I also use it for squaring up if I need to, shrinking or stretching a block. When I made the large HSTs for the baskets I cut them apart and did a light spray of starch on the seam when pressing them. It made it lay perfectly flat for cutting and piecing. I wouldn't do that on a piece that is already cut to the final size because it can make it shrink up like you wouldn't believe.

Yes, the quilt should be washed when completed but I would do that anyway.
