I stumbled across this jar of Yo-yos at an antique shop today... tell me what you think! I'm pretty excited! They look like they were all hand-stitched and made from original prints... and it's 30s prints from what I can tell. There are originals and repros, right?
There are 207 completed yo-yos, and 3 that have not been finished. I thought I did pretty good- I paid $25 for the lot plus the cute apothecary jar that they came in. ;)

So now:
1. How do I use them? Do they need to be hand-stitched together or can I machine stitch them?
2. They need to be cleaned, they're kind of stinky. The fabric is in good-to-decent condition; How can I wash them?
3. Anything else I should know?

Yay! Happy dance!

Yo-yo jealous, aren't you?! :P

Really pretty. Love them. You can use them for all kinds of things, I like to use them to make flowers, and centers to flowers. You could also join them together for a little candle mat or something like that. You can machine tack them together or hand tack them. They are very versatile, only your imagination knows how many ways you can use them.

I wonder how long it took to make 207 yo-yos?

To wash them I'd probably just soak them in a sink full of soapy water, rinse them and see if that works. Either that or put them in a lingerie bag in the washer if you think the fabric would survive.

You can do so much with them, it's amazing: see what you come up with on Google. I came up with placemats and coverlets but haven't tackled either yet.

Or, you can make a bunch more and have a quilt, or a wall hanging. This is doubled. It was given to me. I have no idea how old it might be.

I would soak them in oxyclean and then hand rinse and air dry. maybe spin them out in a lingerie bag. I think it would be awesome to get a few repos that would coordinate and make a table cover with blocks of solid and blocks of yoyos. Kinda like a battenburg lace of yoyo's if you will. Of course, I would only go to all that trouble if 30's fabs fit my kitchen/dining decor which it would. Just an idea. Have fun!

Great use of yoyos Newby. I would also use a lingerie bag to wash them in in the washer on gentle cycle.

Lucky you, they look very pretty, I haven't gotten into the yo-yo thing, don't think I will.

What a find. I have some that I had made a few years ago that I found recently when decluttering my sewing room. There are many uses. They are so easy to make. I used to have and instruction book with different patterns. It had a vest pattern in it, I think.

I googled and found several sites with yo-yo instructions, patterns, etc.

If you have friends who like wine, one of these might be nice.

That wine caddy is cool. Is there a pattern available somewhere for it?

What a great find. Lucky you. I can't wait to see what you decide to do with them.

Thank you all!!

>pressure!!< lol... I'm not sure what to make either.... I'm waiting on some repros to come from Hancocks of Paducah... I'm planning on using those new repros with these originals.

Would it be a sin to use non-30s fabrics with them??? Curious.

Great find!!!!!!!

Laura1557 07-03-2010 02:13 PM

I would think using non-30s fabric alongside your find would make an interesting contrast. It wouldn't bother me any.... :)
