Why not do the hearts in a completely different color/fabric/pattern?
How about a little quirk and place the hearts every which way; over a block ditch, upside down, downsite up, sideways, half a heart one way half the other way, etc, etc; have some fun. I love the way it looks now and just try some other placement of the hearts. Be adventureous.

If you don’t have enough to do every white block, I personally would do them randomly with no pattern. I like that look better, but that’s just me. :)

Try just doing the hearts in the outside border squares. I think that would look great.
I think your DH had the best idea and it looks great with the hearts in every light square. Beautiful quilt.
How about random, even if you don't use all the hearts.

Ditto! - Or place just in outer squares...will leave a few hearts left over. Applique them on back of quilt along with label.....just another idea. |
the first one is great. I would use that one.
If you had still enough of the light fabric left I would suggest the following:
In lanes 2 and 3 put light hearts on the dark fabric and dark hearts on the light fabrics. Leave lanes 4 and 5 blank. Repeat the pattern from lanes 2 and 3 in lanes 6 and 7. It's just an alternative. |
I think each heart in the bottom row needs to be moved one light block to the right. If you do that, they'll be just right, I think.
How about just on the light squares on the outside row - top, sides and bottom?
How about placing a heart in a white square and then the next square embroider a redwork heart of the same design and alternate all through the quilt....I counted 20 hearts and 40 white squares...so should work....and it will look balanced and intentional.
just my 2 red cents worth... |
How about starting diagonally with the middle row placing a heart on every other white block. Then work the top rows and then the bottom. I think that would look good.
I kind of like the first one but in the beginning I liked the second one. They both are actually great but still maybe #1
I like Lacelady suggestion too!
What came to mind when I looked at the two pictures was to perhaps start at top left square and place them on the diagonal. Skip a diagonal row and place the next group on that diagonal. If I counted correctly, you would need 19 hearts and you have more than that. So it might work.
The top is done, people!!!
You might try clustering the hearts in the center of the quilt and then the the outer rows become sort of a border around them. They seem a little too scattered to me as they are here. Just an idea.
I love hearts and especially in quilts. The hearts really do add a lot of interest. I'm sure your nephew and his wife will love it no matter where you place the hearts!
What about in the first layout moving each of the two bottom hearts over one vertical column so the hearts are in the outside columns and the 2 middle columns? It would then be balanced.
Do you have enough to do their Last name Initial? Personalize it.
Stick some spanner shapes in the other blocks so that it really is a 'his and hers' quilt...
How about just doing the blocks on the outside with hearts.
It would look like another border. Just a thought. Mary |
i may be too late, but it does need to be balanced more. lovely
I love the final layout. Your DH is very good at this.
Nice job!! I love it! Thanks for sharing. |
What about every other rows going down?
how about putting the hearts on the white blocks in the shape of a large heart?

i think i would use just 1 in the bottom corner with there names & the date on it.
of course, my applique isn't all that hot, so that could be why i like just one. |
