I really like the drunkard's path you have and also like the border but tend to agree that while it looks good it may not be perfect. A lot of good suggestions have been made so you have options to experiment with. Your piecing and curves are perfect, drunkard's path is one of my favorite patterns because there are so many ways to lay it out. Keep us posted as to how you finish up.

I agree. A narrow white border before adding the wider border may just be the trick to breaking it up a bit. The quilt is gorgeous! Nice job

I like it but if it was mine i would put a 2 or 3 inch light colored or light gray strip around the top then add the border. beautiful quilt and you matched everything nicely but i think if u did that you might like it better... :)

Karen G 03-30-2013 08:15 AM

maybe a narrow border of the light fabric between the dp and the print border?

patsynel 03-30-2013 08:39 AM

I think it looks great as it is. You did a good job of picking a border that compliments the drunkard's path pattern.

Looks good to me!!!!

BizzieLizzie 03-30-2013 05:59 PM

It is a beautiful top. The floral border looks nice to me and I feel works well with the whole colour scheme. Perhaps it would work better to have a thin light border between the blocks and the floral border? About 1/2"-2" in width depending on your preference? You could try a cream, white, grey, tan or yellow colour maybe? Just a suggestion. I think that you need to do what you feel is right for you. Best wishes and I look forward to seeing your completed quilt! Thank you for the opportunity to offer my thoughts. :)

I like it alot but maybe try a 2" plain color between the drunkards path and the floral???

That's exactly what I was thinking - a mix of geometic/modern with traditional seems to clash.

Reba'squilts 03-31-2013 03:48 AM

I like the contrast between the border and the blocks. I was trying out a pattern from Eleanor Burns and I ended up with a long thin quilt center. I also did not have enough fabric to make it wider. I bordered it and will hopefully use it as a quilt for a cancer raffle. I will try to post pic tomorrow to get opinions as you have done. Yours looks better then mine!

I don't see a problem, I like it just as it is

twinkie 03-31-2013 04:06 AM

I love the border fabric you chose. I think it is perfect.

tweety2 03-31-2013 04:08 AM

I love it just as it is. Soooo pretty! Nice job!

Snooze2978 03-31-2013 04:13 AM

How about adding a small border say in white or whatever the lighter color is in the blocks before the larger border as that would set it off more?

KathyM 03-31-2013 05:10 AM

I wouldn't mix geometric with floral, not from the same family.

bunniequilter 03-31-2013 05:19 AM

Maybe a very thin inner border of the grey to seperate the border and the blocks.

huntannette 03-31-2013 05:30 AM

I`d cut that border in half and add a smaller white border between the two(that white fabric in your quilt if you still have some left would be perfect) ...i just find your border is a bit large and adding some contrast would cut it down...but that`s just me......love the giant drunkard`s path.....

I agree here!!! It's a beautiful quilt!

Janice McC 03-31-2013 05:37 AM

I also agree that the florals and geometrics don't quite work (for me) but the piecing is wonderful! Can't wait to see what you decide to do.

I agree with whoever said that the geometric and floral prints don't go together that well. How about no border? It's really lovely!

MadP 03-31-2013 06:48 AM

I think it is fine. Bind with one of the other fabrics.

heberstitcher 03-31-2013 07:08 AM

I think it looks terrific!!! Great job

So, I went into the stash hunting for fabrics that matched because I didn't have any more of these fabrics left. This is the only fabric that came close to the colors. There is just something about it that doesn't set well with me. But, I can't put my finger on it. Is the border too busy? Or is the quilt too busy for the border? Help! What is wrong with it? should I just take the borders off and bind it and call it a lap quilt? Or keep searching for more solid maroon to make the borders? Or, do you think it is okay as is?

I like it. It blends well and looks good.

deanneellen 03-31-2013 07:27 AM

I agree with Sarah in Brooklyn. I think the flowered border just doesn't fit the more modern aspect of your Drunkard's path fabric.

She took the words right out of my fingers. Please tell us what you end up doing.

quiltingeileen 03-31-2013 07:30 AM

I agree also.

cpcarolyn 03-31-2013 07:35 AM

I agree the boarder dosen't do anything for the quilt. Keep looking. Love your drunkard path blocks.

abdconsultant 03-31-2013 07:38 AM

at first glance all i see is the center, pick another fabric with small areas of white in the background, i believe you will like it a lot better. Love the center blocks!

feffertim 03-31-2013 07:50 AM

I think a narrow border of white before the larger border would set off the drunkards path and then the floral border would tie in better.

nana2 03-31-2013 07:54 AM

I am certainly no expert, but I agree that the border needs to be a solid that presents more of a flow of the blocks into the boder. However the pioneer ladies had to use what they had on hand and I think we have become a generation that needs to learn that also. If you really hate it, then do the work of replacing the border. Otherwise just remember the fun you had making the blocks and know that this quilt can be used and loved.

orangeroom 03-31-2013 07:57 AM

I understand what you're saying. The main part of the quilt looks modern and the floral border seems to remind me of civil war fabric.

KathyKat 03-31-2013 08:01 AM

I think it looks great! I'd add a narrow black border to the outside or bind in black to finish the look.

solstice3 03-31-2013 09:47 AM

I like it!!

catmcclure 03-31-2013 10:09 AM

I know I'm going bonkers now. Looking at your block all I saw was Moose ankles and hooves. Like the blocks though.

MarthaT 03-31-2013 10:24 AM

Others are saying exactly what I was thinking...a narrow, solid color border is needed to frame the center and separate from the border. I'm not sure about the border, but I think it can work if a narrow border keeps it away from the pieced part.

psailer 03-31-2013 10:38 AM

i like it just the way it is.. it is a beautiful.. and if you dont get where you like it send it my way i love it...lol.... seriously it looks great...

caspharm 03-31-2013 10:40 AM

I think a solid border would look better. Actually, how about a narrow grey inner border and a maroon outer border (variation on nygal's idea).

Loretta 03-31-2013 10:51 AM

I don't think the border does anything for the quilt. Take them off and use the light color you already have in it if you have enough. It is so well done.

tessagin 03-31-2013 11:00 AM

Ditto to thimblebug6000's comment. Also if you have enough of the lightest pattern to make a small sash around then the border you have will make everything pop. A friend of mine who has quilted for years tipped me this; when you put the material together i.e. a 9patch then try a strip for the slim outside border then another for the larger border. I don't think it's too busy but I do think it needs something to break it up.

TGood 03-31-2013 11:30 AM

How about a more narrow border of print and then finish with a wider marroon border?

I agree with Sarah. The geometric and floral do not like each other.
