Wow, It's like Christmas!

solstice3 07-01-2012 06:02 AM

Please post what you end up doing with them

GA-Ann 07-01-2012 06:16 AM

Those Christmas blocks look like the start of a Lone Star, done in strips, which need trimming to finish up the diamond shape. Eight is the number it takes to make it.

That is collection is absolutely fabulous - - - and also, thank you Sparkys_Mom for the mention of the book "Setting Solutions" - - that is great. I looked at preview on Amazon and thinking of getting it.

I spent a lot of time last night trying to finish going through everything - STILL not finished! I do think I've found all the blocks, though and there are a ton. I'll try to photograph more of them later, but I have more sorting and pressing to do first.

They could be left over from a project or if the lady belongs to a guild they could come from there, I have heard of guilds where everyone in the guild gives you a block on your birthday made from colors and designs you have requested. My guild has something we call a monthly lottery block, at the business meeting each month everyone is given a pattern and colors to make a block and then those who make a block get their name put into a pot and the winner get all the blocks made for that month depending on how many people made blocks you can end up with any where from 5 to 20 blocks. Some months I have won and really didn't want to do anything with those blocks so they sit in a drawer waiting for me to come up with an idea.

very nice!!!!

I think batiks hold up well to washing so using them shouldn't be a problem. They might fade some, but that will only add to their charm. I agree that having a design wall/flannel backed tablecloth to play with them on is going to be very helpful in planning for using the blocks. I would also not make any strip blocks until after using up the pre-made blocks as you might need the scraps for sashing, etc. in setting them. Also, there is nothing that says you can't use non-batiks for setting these blocks! Some of them would look great with some tone on tone white or other light colors between the blocks.

These look like the start of kaleidoscope blocks to me. You can make them square by adding a triangle onto every other wedge.

southernmema 07-01-2012 11:19 AM

Congratulations! You have a great friend.

Wanabee Quiltin 07-01-2012 11:25 AM

For these 62 blocks that match: use your stitches on the sewing machine to applique these onto a solid piece of fabric, like a dresden plate. You should be able to make several charity quilts out of the fabric and blocks she has given you.

Gorgeous scraps! Lucky-lucky! Don't panic--just enjoy!

Thanks! There are 8 of them so I'll be checking that out later, too. :)

What a bonanza! You're going to have so much fun playing with all these.

helenquilt 07-01-2012 12:54 PM

I would put like blocks together or even like colors together. Just lay them out until as large as you want and add borders to blocks so they fit together. I taught classes for years and later divided my left over blocks in light and dark pile and put them all together. My dark quilt I made the lining out of scraps that were 45" wide but from 8 to 16" long. The quilt finished 45" by 60" and it was the first one I sold when I decided to sell some. I thought it was the uglist one I had ever made.

Donnasue 07-01-2012 01:02 PM

If I had those "scraps", I would be in scrap heaven!!!

I just went through all the scrap suggestions made on Bonnie Hunter's website http://quiltville.com/scrapusersystem.shtml I'm using her guidelines. I had already started sorting by color family and by shapes. Her information is really helpful. Then I went and looked at a lot of the free quilt patterns she has - lots of good ideas there, too.

Happy day for you! what fun it all looks like!

earthwalker 07-01-2012 05:02 PM

Thanks for sharing your wonderful treasure! I am sure in no time inspiration will strike and you will be on your way to making some stunning quilts. Love your dog...he looks gorgeous.

KathyPhillips 07-01-2012 05:08 PM

Someone else might have told you already, but it looks like the Christmas blocks are meant to be Star blocks, they just need to be cut into diamond shapes and sewn together. You need a pattern for sewing them together, or someone experienced with making Star quilts. Love all the fabrics and blocks!

MimiBug123 07-01-2012 07:26 PM

Man! I wish someone would give me "scraps" like that!!!

maxnme01 07-01-2012 08:03 PM

How about applique them to a neutral backing? Lucky duck.....

SandScraps 07-02-2012 06:41 AM

Wow! It looks like you hit a jackpot rather than a box of scraps! Enjoy sorting and using them.

emlee51 07-03-2012 01:46 PM

I'm sure you'll find a use for them...I see a little magazine and book time coming up! Such a thoughtful donation!

needles3thread 07-03-2012 01:59 PM

These 62 pastel blocks could be appliqued on solid or white-on-white blocks, & a quilt would be very pretty made with them.
I love soft pastel colors. Please show us pictures of what you make with them. Mae

I think those are the beginnings of Kaleidoscope blocks. Put triangles on 4 of the corners?

The fabrics in that batik star are too, too yummy! You, girlfriend, did what we call SCORE! Those scraps are awesome & I know you'll make some fabulous quilts for them. See? This is what happens when you're so loving & giving (making charity quilts)? Karma...

lfstamper 07-03-2012 03:58 PM

What a wonderful way to donate scraps. You will have some awesome quilts with this. Looking forward to seeing the results.

CMARAS1234 07-08-2012 09:20 PM

As for the 62 blocks ,I would mount them like a dresden plate, with fusible . turn wrong side to wrong side of fusible an sew all around . trim in circle, make a slit in center , turn and. press to a block of muslin , white or tone on tone, then sew all around with invisible thread , then stitch of your choice.ie button hole or hem stitch.. then i would sash and cornerstone , and border. would be lovely jusy mho. cmaras

Just to add, I think it is 60 degree triangles you add to each of the 4 corners. I'd try cutting 4 from paper first to make sure they are the right size and shape, stitch on with a basting stitch for easy removal.
