It seems like I am the only one who picked up my grandmothers tallent for quilting, or any arts and crafts for that matter. When going home to visit recently my aunt and I found this at the bottom of the closet. I cant wait to bring her with me to AK and get her oiled, cleaned, and up and running. What do you guys think? Its a Heavy Duty Singer 457 Zig Zag. This isnt my sewing machine but this is what she looks like. We even have the carrying case for it! I am super excited. Just researching this thing they are running for up to 215 bucks for her. From what I have found out she was made in the 1930's.

I think it was made in the 50's or later. Nice! Good to have Grandma's machine.

Cool!!1 Go you!! Have lots of fun using it!!!

I don't think 1930's machines had reverse or zig zag.
Its a beauty.

Might be im finding some that say 1930s and some that say 1960s. Doesnt really matter what year it was made to me, it has sentimental value and is priceless no matter what.

Tink's Mom 04-11-2011 03:35 PM

It is a later 60's machine...but she is a beauty...

RUSewing 04-11-2011 03:41 PM

Good for you! There are some internet sites for free dating of machines and downloadable Singer manuals. You'll need the serial number. Without a doubt - she's a grand old lady!

I know you'll enjoy sewing on your grandma's machine. Looks like a sturdy workhorse.

I had one just like that sewed great, i let my mother n law use and she claims its hers....she has it now burried in a room full of all kinds of nothing.

jljack 04-11-2011 03:45 PM

The 400 series were hard working, sturdy machines for the home. You'll have so much fun with her, and what a treat that she was your grandma's machine. Keep her well oiled and she will run forever!! :-) I love the vintage Singers--I have 2 of them myself!!

Looks like the ones we learned to sew on in school...so I think mid to late 60s. Enjoy!

jmabby 04-11-2011 07:16 PM

that machine was made when machines were made good

raedar63 04-11-2011 10:35 PM

Looks like the one mom had except it was grey, I can still hear and smell it....

luvstitches 04-12-2011 01:02 AM

cool, looks like one I use to sew on with my Grandmother. It brings back some awesome memories....I lost my grandma 35 years ago. I am the only one that got my Grandma's love of sewing, knitting, crocheting.

Pitty Pat 04-12-2011 03:54 AM

What a very nice gift to pass on...

abdconsultant 04-12-2011 03:56 AM

not only can you sew silk perfectly on that machine, she'll go right through a 2 x 4 . lucky you

PunkQuilter 04-12-2011 04:23 AM

Lucky you to have your G'mas machine. I like the vintage ones myself....I have 9. My Grandmother was a seamstress. She could make patterns out of newspaper! I wish I had her machine or tools and notions.

Scrap Happy 04-12-2011 05:29 AM

She's beautiful and built to last. I love the older sewing machines. Enjoy her :-P

I bought a machine like that in 1969. First time I had a zig zag machine.

Jennifer22206 04-12-2011 01:06 PM

lovestosew 04-12-2011 01:35 PM

I had one just like it. My parents bought it for me as a birthday present when I turned 14. Loved it, and wonder what ever happened to it.

Lillie 04-12-2011 01:51 PM

I have one that I rescued from the trash. I oiled, cleaned and have been sewing on it now for 2 yrs. Mine was said to be a 1965 machine by the man in my area. I hope whomever had her before me loved it as much as I do. I know you will love your grandmother's machine.Happy quilting!!!!!!
