Thanks everybody! I don't have kids but it seems to me this ought to be a useful thing!
I have a BUNCH of squares left in all sizes; I'm going to put together a couple bibs to add to the gift and then the remainder will go for Linus quilts - probably will have enough to make 2 more "crib" size quilts. (I deliberately bought extra for Linus.)

A memorable baby gift. It's great and the water resistant fabric was a stellar idea.! What is PUL please, I'm not familiar, but it sounds like a solution to some gifts!

PUL is a knit fabric with a polyurethane lining to make it waterproof. So it's slightly fuzzy on one side and sort of plasticky on the other side, but it stays very soft and flexible (much more than vinyl). Kind of a hassle to sew - the plasticky side tends to grip the presser foot so a teflon foot or roller foot is a help; I was able to just turn it towards the feed dogs and got by ok.
Joann's sells it as part of their 'baby boutique' area, and Fabric.com carries it as well. I think lot of people who make homemade cloth diapers use it as the outside layer of the diaper to help prevent leaks.
I still have some left over that I think I will use as the backside of the bibs. :)
