Peacocky enough?

I am working on a set of 3 commissioned quilts - which I hope are my first and last commission quilts. The first one is done and was a hit - for a son in the Army. (Pics below)
THEN she wanted one for each of her two other adult kids. One to have purples and the other to be earth tones - featuring rust. Once I started the "purple" one I got a message to not start the rust one - that one has mentioned that peacock colors are a favorite so can that one have peacock colors. (Of course, I've already collected the fabrics for the earth tone one!) So - you are seeing pics of the Purple one, but I'm thinking that one can Magic-Chango become ... PEACOCK colors! What do you think? Then I just need to figure out what else I have that's purple. I've never made a quilt that anyone paid me for. From now on I'll sell things I've already made - but no more "commissioned" products! The batik fabrics are from Connecting Threads - a bundle of 24 fat quarters for around $40 if I remember it right. The pattern is a Turning 12. The backing is from Hancock Fabrics (not Hancock of Paducah - just plain Hancock!) NOTE _ the lady who asked for these quilts is a friend and co-worker. I have taught all 3 of these "kids". When asked previously if I'd sell a quilt I've always said, "Sorry, you can't afford me!" with a smile. I'm making these for a ridiculously low price, but ... not again! |
I definitely think the quilt in the first two pictures would work as being peacock colors.
They are beautiful!
To me, peacock colors are jewel tone blues, greens, purples... so I'd definitely say that this could qualify as peacock-inspired! :D Lovely quilts.
I agree the first quilt looks peacocky to me. I have given alot, ok, most of my quilts away and have a Sis - in - law and her Dad, after her getting a comforter and two quilts, the Dad only one, had the nerve to want me to make quilts with their color choices. Her Dad has offered me money, she has not. I won't take money because they are in charge and would take the fun out of it for me. I have decided to stop giving them away and just keep them. Sis in law has hers put away and just wants to collect them.
nice job....:)
I've always given them away also - and love doing that. But .. this is an expensive hobby! So the thought was if I just got enough from a sale to pay for more fabric then I had my fun and got some cash, too. But ... not so much fun. :( I'm so nervous that my vision won't match hers. Also nervous about my workmanship. Not fun. They are certainly good enough to be given away! AND if I go with selling only completed projects people can see what they are getting.

Beautiful quilts. I think the first two could be peacock colors.

I know what you mean about making things for the "kid" you've taught. I made wedding cakes up until this year. Hopefully, no more. Anywhoo, when I have done one for a child that was a former student, I always gave them a ridiculously low price. (Probably ended up costing me.) The last one I made was definitely at a loss -- supplies and ingredients have risen in price so much.
Your quilts are gorgeous. The lady needs to be told that you had already shopped for fabrics for the third quilt before she changed her mind. Good luck and keep us posted. |
nicely done, I love them.
those are quilts.I prefer to make what I feel the urge to make.If it sells -great-if not I have nice presents when needed.I like the freedom to choose fabric and patterns myself.
both very nice and it can be peacock colors
You're quilts are beautiful and I agree the first one could be peacock colors. If she doesn't want the earth tone colors quilt you could list it on Etsy or maybe on CL. I don't do commission work because it takes the fun out of it for me. Most people don't understand the cost and time involved in making quilts, so she has no idea what she is asking from you. It is extra hard when it is a friend and co worker, before I bought anymore fabric I would make sure that purple is what she wants. Off the subject but many years ago I sold an old car ($300) to a friend, everytime there were mechanical issues she acted like it was my fault.

They are both great but the first one would be peacock colours to me. Live and learn, we've all done it I'm sure.
ooooh those are just wonderful. nice job.
In 40 years of quilting I did One (1) yes one for money. Never again. It took the joy. I'll just give away. Your work is beautiful. Yikes, I wouldn't be happy with mind-changing, especially after having already bought the fabric. Good luck

Very beautiful quilts.
I really like the third one - using the camo fabrics - nicest one I've seen using those types of prints.
Can you get this person to go with you and have HER buy the fabrics she wants? Especially since you already bought the fabrics for the earth tone ones and she changed her mind. Seems like some people think fabric is free to the maker!!! I haven't seen any peacocks with orange on them - The teals, blues would work - and if one looks carefully at a peacock, there are browns and grays on them, too. |
Lovely quilts!
Both quilts beautiful
I have had co workers ask me to make them a quilt. I always tell them: you must buy the fabric you want, the pattern you want me to use and tell me how you want it quilted so that I can tell the LAQ what you want done. Then they must pay the LAQ. I usually donate my time (because most people are agog when I tell them how much I would charge for a quilt that was not for a friend) and thread (sometimes). Once I tell them how much I charge for a quilt that I have to furnish fabric, LAQ, time and thread, they usually back off.

Both are great. Wonderful fabrics you worked with too.
Oh my great nephew would go crazy for that second one.

Beautiful quilts! Love the first one. Definitely peacock colors.
WOW - They are all just terrific, great job and thank you for sharing
Have a Blessed day Ellen |
Love love love color and you did just that lots of color! Hey being a peacock isn't all that bad! They are beautiful...
It definitely has the jeweled tones that I associate with peacocks, but the balance of colors doesn't scream peacock to me. If you look at photos of peacocks or peacock feathers, the teals, blues, and greens are pretty dominant, with just a touch of the other jewel tones. You've definitely used the colors of the peacock palatte, but if I looked at that without you telling me what it's supposed to be, I would never in a million years have guessed peacock, I don't think. Just my two cents! Both quilts are really beautiful though!
very nice, what is the pattern of the first one?
They are both beautiful. I love the backing on the first one. It is so colorful. Do you know the fabric line?
They look wonderful! :)
