This is the 1st block of 12 in my pansy lap quilt. Nothing is stitched down, just barely fused to the background.

Vicki, Those pansies are going to be lovely. I mean, they already are but when they are stitched down. Wow! I can hardly wait to see the finished product. Stitch fast!!! :P
P.S. I really like the woven basket too.

I love pansies, and your colors are so on. Now do you hand sew them?
How do you finish the block. I want to do some flowers but don't know much about it yet.

Vicki, you've really picked great colors for the flowers! Love 'em! Will there be little pansy faces on them? How big is each block?

The finnished size will be a 10" block. It will be 3 across and 4 down. I am hoping that with sashing, that will do for a lap or sofa quilt. I plan to at least outline each petal of the flowers with top stitching. This is an accumnulation of fat quarters that I bought at the quilt show in Hampton, VA a few weeks ago with this quilt in mind. I am unsure of the color for the sashing, but am thinking about using the same green as the petals, but will have to play around with it and try different greens to see if I like that one best. The fabrics were all batiks, that was a big thing at the quilt show this year lots and lots of them used in all diffferent styles.
I am using variations of these fabrics in all the blocks, but with batiks you can do that and the colors will be arranged in different orders. The basket was a variation of an old pattern by Ruby Short McKIm who use to publish years ago (like maybe the 30's and 40's). It was shown in an issue of American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine. I wanted to do baskets but with a little different twist to them and this was fairly easy to do using a pressing bar. The strips were seamed wrong sides together and the seam is trimmed and turned to the back and pressed--much easier that trying to turn each strip inside out and then press. I had some washaway stabilizer in the closet that has a paper back to peel off. When you do this one side becomes slightly tacky or sticky and that made weaving the baskets much easier than having to use a lot of pins to hold everything in place. Each basket took one strip 1 1/2 inches by width of the fabric 42-45".
My aunt is in her 80's and has always loved pansies and I think that's where I got my love of them too. She is a special lady and I wanted to do something special for her, and that's where the idea to use pansies came from. I used a very light weight fusible webbing--no paper on the back so a pressing cloth is needed, but it is not stiff like some of the others can be. I got it at the fabric store and it is called fine fuse. It was a piece 23 1/2 by 36" for about $3.00 well worth it to me.

My mouth fell open when I saw these. Absolutely GORGEOUS! I showed my Mom because she loves pansies. She thought they were really great. Although, she thinks I'm crazy sometimes (When I'm into something, I'm really INTO it. Excited about it...)

Really love the Pansies. My grandmother always had pansies planted in her garden so I think of her every time I see a Pansy. Id love to see the pattern for the Pansies. Tho I'm sure I could come up with one of my own, yours already looks perfect. Do you sew around the the edges of the Pansies or just iron on the fusible web? And will it stay in place if it's washed?

I have 3 blocks assembled but not stitched. They are just fused in place. I have lots more flowers cut out, but had to set it aside for a little while. A lady that I work with is retiring June 1 and I wanted to make something for her since she has always been so nice to me. I found Aunt Hatties Garden in McCalls under web bonuses and am working on it now. It is an applique with much larger pieces ,but I am having a terrible time deciding on sashing and border fabrics. I buy something I like and by the time I get it home, I have decided that it's too dark. I think I will use the fabrics anyway but insert a third narrow border of buttery yellow to lighten it up. I am so wishy washy! I have such a hard time deciding. Please someone come over and make the decision for me :lol: :!: :!:

I don't usually add borders , but mine have been simple patterns. when I did a border, I used a narrow white, and then used one of the fabrics that were in the quilt

Vicki, you should try to find the "Molly's Magic Pansies" pattern online. I think the sashing in it may be just what you are after. It is composed of square of various green that are pieced, and just for kicks, they threw in a couple of nine patches, which I made up in deep violet and white. It really adds interest.

I found the patern on the internet that I thinkcame from the Stitchin Post. It was a pincushion pattern that I erduced by 25%. The basket was in American Patchwork and Quilting Oct '01 issue. thanks for the compliment.

Glad you liked it. The flower was found on The Stitchin posts web site. It was for a pansy pincushion and I simply reduced the pattern on the copier to 50%, I think. The baskets are actually woven strips of fabric and that came from American Patchworking and Quilting--one of the 2001 issues. The completed quilt is posted somewhere as well. I got it done jsut in time to take it to my aunt when I went to see family Labor Day weekend.

Can you post a picture of the completed quilt? Would love to see it.

It wasn't that hard to do. I used lots of fusible webbing. It was tedious--same steps over and over but not hard. My aunt cried when I gave it to her so I know she loved it and I treasure the time we spent together over Labor Day. We had such a nice visit!

I chose the pansy block because it remninded me of the times when I was a little girl that she always had pansies in her front yard. They were so pretty.

Sometimes it is good to get the quilt put together then decide the borders. That has been advice given me and most of the time works for me. tlcqultnut

The pattern I used from the stitchin Post is a free one that I downloaded and reduced on the copier. The basket was in an old magazine from 2001.
