I agree with a sampler. You can start with more simple blocks and move on to more complicated blocks. I started quilting about a year and a half ago with no real sewing experience at all. I took a class at my LQS and made a king sized quilt with twenty five 15" blocks. I'll list the squares I did and the technique used as best I can:

Straight seam block: Patience Corner - Alabama

Triangles : Churn Dash - Old Maid's Puzzle - Ohio Star - Card Tricks -
Geometric - Pinwheels and Squares - Jack In the Box

8 Point Centers: Spider Web - Kaleidoscope

Here are a couple of pics:

Strips: Log Cabin - Bright Hopes - Over the Rainbow - Bricks

Applique: Dresden Plate - Grandmother's Fan

Curves: Sunflower - Love Ring - Fools Puzzle - Rob Peter to Pay Paul

Just some ideas on how you can start out really easy and expand. You gain LOTS of experience and confidence this way!

Angie 06-26-2009 05:47 AM

Thank you all for the compliments. I do love it, but believe me there are mistakes and I've learned ALOT from doing a sampler and I've been working on this for about a year.

I think one of the reasons it turned out well is that the instructors at my LQS are very patient! One has to be in her eighties, she's the owner and her daughter used to teach Junion Kindergarten. They are wonderful. I only paid $25 dollars for the class, which went for weekly for six months, but they encouraged us to come in if we had a problem to work one on one with us. The older woman worked with me on the hand quilting and I've come a long way thanks to them!
