What are flanges?

They are one inch strips that you fold in half and insert between the patched strips. The center back and center of the sleeves had a double flange so they were wider and are stitched so there is a fold going each direction. The pattern I used called for them and I think they set off the patchwork strips really well. The ones in my jacket are black.
