Yes, in that case I knew it. The English quilt in my book has a beautiful border pattern, a big sea shell! I have already marked the first quarter on my quilt and started quilting yesterday.
Sometimes I finish the center medaillon and I am still thinking about the patterns for the border or I change the original plans. It's not so hard to make the patterns fit. The center can be devided like a cake in 45°, 60°, 90° - pieces and the patterns have to fit there! For the borders I measure the length of my quilt and devide it into equal parts. The remaining rest is a lot of improvisation!

No, the design develops while quilting. The first thing I do after basting is to mark the exact middle of the quilt, than I mark the vertical and the horizontal lines and as well the diagonals through the middle. I baste these lines with a thread, you can still see some of them on the pictures in blue, and they are my guidelines for the center medaillon.

For this quilt I do again the needlemarking method, you can see it here:

Sometimes I only mark single patterns, but the markings last quite long and I can do about a quarter of the quilt at a time.

Andrea, Hello from Andrea from Arizona. We share a love for Wholecloth quilting by hand. Your pattern is outstnading and your quilting is beyond gorgeous  Is your pattern one you designed or one you purchased? I love your pattern so much, I find it difficult to find wonderfully creative patterns iin the USA. A lot of the one I see here that are machine embroidered and that's a big turn off to me...Thank you for saring your beautiful hand work with us...Andie

Hi Andie!
How wonderful to hear that we share our love for Wholecloth quilting!
I didn't purchase the patterns for this quilt. I agree with you, it is difficult or almost impossible to find beautiful patterns and that is the reason why I have started to design patterns by myself, to "redraw" them from pictures and to make my own stencils and templates. I feel very inspired by antique wholecloths and I love their patterns a lot. It Is worth to keep them alive and to use them today in our work.
