Pink scraps

2 Attachment(s)
I have pieced this quilt top for my sister using scraps or other bits from my stash. The only thing I have purchased is extra wide backing. It will be a large ‘sofa’ quilt and measures 58x62.

I plan on using polyester batting for the first time (rather than my usual cotton) as it will be warmer and she is always cold! I hope the central pinwheels will stand out more after quilting.

Nice quilt - but - I did not know that polyester was warmer than cotton batting?

Very pretty. Your sister will love it!

Beautiful quilt and great colors.

No way is polyester batting warmer than 100% cotton-IMHO. Nothing beats 100% cotton except maybe 100% wool but I don’t live in Alaska or
Canada.

Great quilt. I would try the wool batting. It's wonderful when I'm really chilled.

I did quite a bit of reading on this and most places said the same thing. Wool is the warmest (but is incredibly expensive over here!). Then polyester and finally cotton and bamboo about equal. This is mainly because polyester usually has higher loft so traps more air - as long as the quilting isn’t too dense.

I usually use 100% cotton or 80/20 blends as they are more breathable

Love the quilt top. I can't wait to see how you quilt it. :o

Never ceases to amaze me how scraps can be turned into something so nice. Good job.

Thanks everyone :)

Beautiful! She will love it!

Your quilting will be what defines the pinwheels in the center. You will have to custom quilt them to achieve this (my opinion). I hope to see it after you have finished the quilting.

RJLinkletter 09-09-2019 09:41 PM

Ellen, I plan to SID around each pinwheel which will hopefully work. Hardly anyone has a LA over here in UK as houses are not big enough (and quilting is not as popular) so it is all custom quilting on domestic machines anyway.

rilene 09-10-2019 10:04 AM

Cute quilt! She'll love it! I have found wool batting to be the warmest.

I see. If you quilt something different around each pinwheel, that will separate them and make them stand out like you want. You can repeat the different motifs on other pinwheels, just not touching each other. :-)

I am looking forward to see your quilt after you finish quilting it.

I believe you’re right but I couldn’t find a reasonably priced supplier over here.

I recently talked with a gal that does lots of twister patterns and designs, and she said the secret to them is that you always alternate light and dark colored squares. Then the pinwheels will show off the best. Just a little hint to share.
