I probably made a pinwheel for the sampler we made in the intro to quilting class I took last summer, but ... this is the first one since then. I know these fabrics are a bit busy, but am okay with that. BUT ... would you put sashing around each 4-block square? The darker blue perhaps? The border is busy, too. I have the squares cut and have this one pinwheel put together so suggest away!

I like it. This is a cheery cherry quilt. I think when it is done, it will be just fine. You could do your binding in a solid color of one of the main colors. I love the fabric since I love cherries!
I think that border would look great if you first put a narrow strip border of a solid color (maybe red?) to separate the pinwheels from the large border. Just an opinion.
I love it...I wouldn't sash each block, but I would consider putting a thin solid red or blue border between the blocks and the paisley print, then binding in the same solid. Very sweet fabric.
I really like a frame between the quilt center and the border so definately will do that - just was afraid the blocks would be too busy, too, but ... maybe not! I just won't put it all together until I get something solid to check it out. Hoping I can find the darker blue. Don't have anything in my stashlette that's isn't too navy.
Thanks for the advice! |
I woulld sash to control the business of the fabrics!
I would a brite red or yellow in there..just a finished 1" even...will help calm the eye and show your blocks!
oh yea, theres a lot going on in those fabrics! They are pretty, but yea can see the "busy" I would do like already suggested and put a thin solid between the blocks and that border. Just to keep them for all runnin together.
But i have a hard time seeing patterns in a busy quilts. It all just ends up looking like a blur to me. |

I was advised some time back that a thin black border is a great way to frame a quilt. If you use red or blue they may just blend into the block. A fine black line would separate the blocks from the border and give the eye somewhere to rest. You said yourself that your fabrics are quite busy.
Ultimately though it is your quilt to do with what you will. |
Love the cherry prints but I think the paisley's are to busy right next to it. I would put a solid between the two or a cute red with white polka dots, it would kind of play off of the cherry shape
If you decide to use sashing, consider possibly using a darkish green. It is one of the colors in your print and would also serve to calm the busyness of the pinwheels.
The fabric was on the sale shelf at my local quilt shop. It was $3.99 and on 6/30 there was a 30% sale on anything with red, white, or blue in it. That made it about $2.80/yd. Is it looking better to everyone now? :p
I like the idea of green - I'll have to see what I can find. |
I think a narrow darker blue (solid) would look very nice around each block. I think your block would show up better with it. Maybe just an inch wide sashing. Then your pretty border and bind it in red!!

Great deal! Yep solid color wud be better!
I agree with everyone here, a thin border (1") between blocks and border! If you have navy in your stash try it!!! I use a lot of navy in quilts and I think it would make your blocks really 'pop'!!! Love it, great fabric find!!
I agree with the others...love the print and i would do a small solid for the strips and border. It's going to be the prettiest quilt when finished :!:
I would use a sashing around each block. Also I think I would add a narrow black strip before te border,

Sashing
I will second Mom-6 suggestion of using a dark green. I think it will calm the busy of the pattern but pull the quilt together. Very nice fabrics- great price, too.
I think I would go with something more solid. Just my $0.02 worth.
I agree with others that you will need something to tame down the busyness.. fram each block with thin strip of red and then put smaller border before you put on the border you picked out. Will be waiting to see the finished product. Very bright and cheerful!!
How about a green that matches the cherry stems.
What great fabric! I would go with a sashing. My first thought was deep red, like cherries, but I also like the idea of a green. This is going look great & I can't wait to see it together!

I agree with several others that a solid or something that reads solid would look good for a thin sashing and also a thin border before putting on the paisley. Fabrics are great.

I agree solid color for sashing.
I agree you need sashing, but I would wait until the blocks are done and see if the sashing is better around each pinwheel 4-patch block or a section of 4 or 9 pinwheel sets. A dark, olive or khaki green would be good.
Love, love, love all the input. I auditioned red and a darker blue - don't have a green to try. A visit to the quilt shop is in order! I'm just happily making 4-block pinwheels until I decide what to do next. I've even wondered about a cream for the sashing and inner border.... but will try the darker colors first.

I would also go for a red sashing around the blocks You could use that fabric for borders or backing.. Going to be real whimsical.
sashing too busy. I love the block--the difference of size in the prints makes it great. But then the sashing isn't different enough in scale
Red!
Red would look great just not the brite you have on the sample lol.
