plastic sled are not just for sliding...

I seen this on Sew Very Easy by Laura. she said to buy a thin plastic sled and use on the bed of your machine for FMQ

It make the fabric move really smoothly there is no drag.. I bought two of the plastic sleds from Amazon, they really work well and they don't cost as much as the super slide thing..

Here is a picture of my set up, boy I hope that the picture does not load upside down, I looked up on here on how to load a picture from a Mac computer so I am hoping it will work. So sorry if it doesn't..

quilterpurpledog 01-31-2018 03:33 AM

That looks like a great set up. I didn't realize the material used for a sled was so thin and flexible. From your photo, it looks like you could cut it to fit whatever your situation. Nice idea. Thanks for passing it along.

SusieQOH 01-31-2018 03:46 AM

I bought them also. They work well for me. I love Laura's tutorials!!!

ArtsyOne 01-31-2018 03:55 AM

What a great idea - thanks so much for sharing!

Stitchnripper 01-31-2018 04:13 AM

I got one too. Mine is blue. It works
great. Better than the sliders or oven mats.

The ones I saw on Amazon are roll up sleds - if that is what you bought, how did you relax the roll up?

thimblebug6000 01-31-2018 07:34 AM

Interesting. Wonder how frustrating it is to get in and change a drop in bobbin like I have?

I left mine with just a clamp on the side as you can see, the sled lefts up easy as it is thin and very flexible, no problem with changing the bobbin

jlt37869 01-31-2018 10:45 AM

Great idea.

Bluelady 01-31-2018 10:48 AM

Do they smell? I cant abide that awful plastic chemical odor so many plastic things have

I clipped an opening for the plate and bobbin. Works like a gem and I leave it in place for all of my sewing! No problem with masking tape and easy to put on and remove if necessary.

No, not at all.

I love them too!

I bought 2 red sleds, unrolled them and put them under the cushions of my couch for a few days. Worked perfectly.

KLO 01-31-2018 05:04 PM

What a great idea! I have the super slider except that I cannot find it and have no idea where I put it. Guess I had better go check out Amazon. And I too love Laura's tutorials.

PS: Are these the ones that are called Flying Carpet Sleds?

SusieQOH 01-31-2018 07:00 PM

KLO, yes they call them that.
Bluelady- they don't smell at all.
Thimblebug- they lay flat

I watch Laura often, she has the best hints and patterns. This looks very handy, I am going to try it, thank you for passing it on.

I saw the same tutorial a while back and order the sleds from Amazon also.....maybe the red ones are slicker than the blue ones which is what I ordered. When I use the blue ones I have a lot of drag. Had to rip out meandering stitches on a baby quilt this week on four blocks and start over!!

Could you elaborate about the differences of how they each work? I have been considering an oven mat because of seeing it n myGroupon feed for $8.99
. Thanks for any info.

Great idea. We quilters are such a creative bunch!

the flying carpet sled is much bigger. Mine is very slippery at least for me. I cut a hole for the needle. I use a little tape to keep it secure. I found the slider too small and flimsy and it seemed to get stiuck in my stitching even with tape. The oven liners I found were way too thin and took a lot to keep them secured down whuch meant I had to remove to change the bobbin. I wasted a lot on the real thing and cheap replacements. I also had a big piece of vinyl from Walmart but that was very cumbersome to use. The sled doesn't smell to me and is flat and works for me. If folks are happy with their sliders and oven mats that is great.

Does anyone have a link to the video? I couldn't find it on Utube.

This discussion has been interesting and enlightening - thanks for sharing the information.

I'm happy that you posted this info, I've been wondering how those sleds worked! I've actually had one in my Amazon cart since I watched the video LOL. :)

JoyjoyMarie 02-01-2018 01:38 PM

Someone on this board was using a teflon oven liner as a substitute for the super slider and I've been using that, with some degree of success. This looks like a great idea too, and it's bigger, which would be better for a larger quilt! Great share!

wonderful Idea. I have the small supreme slider. Can anyone tell me the price range of the flying carpet sleds?

i got mine from Amazon so just type flying caroet sled into the search bar. I think about $6 but can't remember exactly

maviskw 02-02-2018 05:32 AM

Can things get too slippery? I have a newly refinished treadle. When I have a large piece to work with, it is hard to keep it on the surface. It keeps sliding off. That's not fun either. I need to put a chair or something behind my machine to catch the surplus.

DonnaC 02-02-2018 10:42 AM

I'm trying to remember what quilting teacher said this (might have been in a Craftsy class), but I remember that you should position your quilting surface against a wall, and if possible in a corner so it's bordered on two sides. That keeps the quilt from sliding off and creating drag. Of course, mine isn't set up that way, which is probably why I remember that advice. :)

KLO: look under your cutting mat! That’s where I keep my supreme slider! Stays nice and is always handy!

kat13: When I read your response, I got all excited thinking you had such a good idea that maybe I did just that. But, unfortunately, I could not find the slider under either of my mats. It did get me thinking that it seems that I may have done something similar with it to keep it flat. Now if only I could remember what! Thanks for tweaking my brain memory.

kat13 02-03-2018 08:23 PM

KLO, sure fire way to find it.. is to buy another and keep it under your mat;)

Isn't that the truth! Think I'll just try one of those magic sleds since they are so much cheaper. More money left for fabric, don't you know!!! And yes, that will be stored under my cutting mat for sure.
