I hope the photo turns out. I had to resize....Anyway this is a baby Whale quilt. Please help me with a quilting design you think would look good. I was thinking of ocean waves or water designs. I will be free-motion quilting on my domestic sewing machine. Thank you for your ideas.

Your whale quilt is so cute. I like the idea of ocean waves. A friend made a quilt with fish, and quilted it using waves.
|
Simply adorable...yes, waves would be perfect. I have never used minky on the front of a quilt, only on the backing. How easy or difficult was it yo piece?
|
Your quilt and s so darling! And the texture on the whales is sweet! In my mind I see Seaweed! Making seaweed strands all over I think would be easy on a domestic machine be and cute too.
Please share photos when it’s finished. It really is such a darling quilt! |
I like your idea of ocean waves. You may want to include a water release through their blow holes for something different that could be a real fun design element.
|
That is just too cute!!
Waves (just wavy lines) would be perfect. |
Very cute! Waves would look good. Do you plan to do edge to edge waves or outline stitch the whales and bubbles? Either way would be great.
|
That is so adorable! did you piece the circles in or applique them on? how was it working with the minky?
I would echo around the whales and bubbles and maybe add some interest at the blow hole spouts. otherwise some kind of wavy/water design would be great! |

That's adorable.
I like this quilting (see the picture). It looks wavy and would be a snap to do on your domestic. Watson |
Adorable, I would just do wavy lines all over.
|
I love your quilt and your use of the Minky! I have lots of pieces of Minky left over from backings of several quilts and didn’t have a clue what to do with them, so I appreciate the great idea and look forward to seeing the quilting!

I haven't decided yet about whether I will do edge to edge stitching. I will have to quilt inside the minky whale blocks due to their large size and the batting requirements of quilting distance being 10". |

I would echo around the whales and bubbles and maybe add some interest at the blow hole spouts. otherwise some kind of wavy/water design would be nice I appliqued the circles and the whale eyes.. Here is how I did it: Lay square of minky, right side up, next place interfacing with traced shape on top of minky square. Sew on the traced shape. Trim outside the traced, sewn lines using a pinking shears. Once you have cut your shape out (circles and whale eyes)....carefully cut a slit in the interfacing and turn the minky through the slit. Now you have your minky shape as you see it on my quilt. |
Adorable! I like your wave idea. I would do some cross hatching with matching thread inside the whales using the minkey dots as a guide to stabilize them without flattening the dotty texture.
|
Cute whales!
|
I would perhaps make a circle around the bubbles, but do the waves across the whole quilt, including the whales.

How about waves with seaweed interspersed? Barely there blue for the wave background and barely there green for the seaweed?

I do have a lovely green for seaweed on hand. I will think about adding it last if I think it needs it. thank you all for your ideas! |
Please show us pictures when you finish it. It is a adorable now and you're brave to use minky.

Wavy lines and bubbles.

https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif Hi ...thank you everyone for your input..
I love reading all the ideas you brilliant minded quilters are sending my way. I purchased two colors of thread to audition on a practice quilt sandwich. One is light blue and another barely there blue/green. I have to be remember that baby quilts don't feel as soft if I quilt it to death! I am watching my 7mo grand daughter for 4 days and won't get to quilt for a while. My sewing room is where she sleeps...Thanks goodness the baby quilt is not due until June. |
Thanks for all your design ideas!

I used your ideas of simple waves all over and water spouting over the blow holes. Many thanks!
|
It looks adorable and very comfy! It looks just right. Makes one want to just snuggle up with the whales too. Thank you for sharing it.
|
I like the idea of waves around the whales, and water coming out of their blow-holes. Would also quilt ON the whales the flippers (even if not authentic) and a seam on the tail fluke.
|
Cute quilt! Great job on quilting design.
