Poe Nevermore Quilt
 

This is my third quilt and I think I'm finally getting the hang of getting my sashing right!

The fabric is from Michael Miller from the Nevermore collection and the pattern is available for free on equilter.com.

I altered the pattern just a bit to make the finished size 57" x 71" and switched the fabrics up from the original to a balance I found more appealing.

I decided to make this like an old quilt that my Grandmother made from the 1960s. The sandwiched layer is a thin muslin because the intended recipient lives in AZ and there isn't much need for a heavy blanket in Phoenix! I also chose, like my Grandmother, to not do any top stitching. Instead I tied the quilt every 6.5 inches. I love love love how cozy this blanket is with the tie method.

Can someone answer a question for me, please? Can you use the tie method with cotton batting like Warm & Natural? I know the package tells me that I can stitch as much as 10" apart but I'm not really sure what the definition of "stitch" is in this. Does that mean a single tie every 10" or less would be enough? Or does it mean something different? I appreciate your help! I'm very new to quilting and sometimes my internet searching skills fail me!

In answer to your batting question, it would mean stitching or ties every 10 inches. Not following the suggested quilting distance on your batting can lead to the batting bunching up after the quilt has been washed a few times.

thank you very much! i was just worried that a single tie within the size listed might not be enough to keep it from bunching up or falling apart and i'd hate to have something fall apart after a few washes. thanks again!

I would tie in the sashings near each square corner. that would make certain the batting would not move. lovely quilt!!! is that spiders in the sashing and border print? yikes! I still like it though.

haha! yes it is spiders! to go with the dark Nevermore theme! and the fabric is all from the same line. The biggest challenge was all the time it took to fancy cut every single thing in this quilt.

I thought the same thing about the tying and i tied right where you said, in the corners in the sashing which were about 6.5" apart all around. I just wanted to make sure that would be sufficient for other types of batting, too. thank you for your help!

I could see myself curling up in a big chair with a good book and that quilt. Very nice.
