I did a postage stamp quilt with 1½ squares and can appreciate your wanting to get on with something else. Mine wound up using 3,456 pieces. I absolutely LOVE the star idea. It breaks up the pattern. Thanks for sharing.

The little stars are 9 patches made with 2" squares. The larger stars are a 9 patch block constucted of 4-patch units and a center square of 3.5".
