I used old wool sweaters, felted beyond wearability, to interline these potholders. I am trying to reduce my stash!!

Sweet!!! Great way to reduce stash. (Reminds me of my mother - she would try different blocks and make into potholders... always sharing w/me.)

Barb M 02-04-2008 02:36 PM

Oh i love the green one! Now i know what to do with the sweaters i was about to send off to the thrift store...hmmm, i wonder how many layers of sweater are needed to make it heat proof?...maybe i will try 2 layer? Now i'm inspired

Chele 02-04-2008 02:37 PM

Those are so cute! Way to reduce the stash!

henryparrish76 02-04-2008 02:45 PM

I love the green one. :)

Dawn Hendrix 02-04-2008 03:17 PM

GREAT IDEA.. thanks for sharing!

joannl 02-04-2008 03:53 PM

Love the potholders, I would never have thought to use old sweaters! Great idea. I could probably get all kinds of things done if I didn't spend so much time on here looking at all the great things others are doing!

Very nice potholders! I like them both!!

live2teach 02-04-2008 04:43 PM

Those are very very nice and I love the quilting!

Cathe 02-04-2008 04:59 PM

THey are 9" x 9" and I only used one layer of wool and have found it to be perfectly adequate - but it was a thick sweater.

Lois-nounoe 02-04-2008 07:28 PM

Know what you mean Joannl! Everytime I think I can get off the puter and go to bed I go back to my In Box and have to start all over again!! :D But everyone has such great ideas that I hate to miss any of them!!!

newquiltertoni 02-05-2008 03:09 PM

Love the pot holders. I want to make some eventually. Hope they come out as nice as yours.

Melissa 02-05-2008 03:36 PM

Cathe, they look great! That reminds me that my mom wanted me to make some potholders for her. Hope they turn out as great as yours. :)

Years ago I was into clothing construction and I made lots of sweater-type things out of cotton knits....I had a good sized piece left over from one project so I made a couple potholders to take camping.........they never left the kitchen! The were (and are) the best potholders I've ever had. They are STILL in the wash every week and I hate that they are looking sooooo bad but they are such good ones I hate to discard them. I've long since gotten rid of the cotton knits I once had piles of and I'm so sorry I did. Your potholders are great and appeal to both my "scrappy" preference and my love of the kitchen, cooking, baking. Thanks for sharing.

What a GREAT idea...and so pretty!! :!:

Patty44 04-06-2008 08:04 AM

You did such a good job. I always have trouble with the binding. I hate binding. sometimes I sew right sides together then turn, just so I don't have to do binding.

Harmony 04-06-2008 09:30 AM

These are great! I have all kinds of scraps of cotton batting left over from other projects, and I think that would work well, too. And what a great machine quilting project for us beginners who are intimidated by the whole process, because they're small enough to manipulate!

Feathers 04-06-2008 09:50 PM

Cathe: Beautiful potholders and your quilting looks good too. Great job. Thanks for sharing.

tlrnhi 04-06-2008 10:05 PM

Really nice!
Wonder if I'll have time to make those with everything else I want to make

Celeste 04-06-2008 10:53 PM

I too like the green best. (Get back everyone, it's mine! Now, a nice snarl I learned from my Dobermans, that might help! ?)

sondray 04-07-2008 04:31 AM

Great job! I like them both, guess I'll have to try to make some now. Yours came out sew good.

Feathers 04-07-2008 10:11 AM

Celeste: I like the green, too but I'd take any of the 3 in a heartbeat!

Jaynie 04-07-2008 02:07 PM

NICE potholders. My best quilting friend often will make pot holders or placemats from quilt blocks that have been UFO's for tooooo long or using leftover blocks. She will then use the pot holders as prizes for bunko or gifts tucked in with somethings else.

Lois-nounoe 04-07-2008 03:09 PM

I too want to make some pot holders just so I can practice my machine quilting. I always start with a BIG project before I'm really ready for it. I was wondering if you can use old bath towels for the batting! We all have, I'm sure, the towels that have a bad place that we just can't seem to throw away.

Jaynie 04-07-2008 04:48 PM

Don't know why you couldn't use part of a towel for batting....I have store bought potholders that are made of thick terry cloth and nothing else. sounds like a good idea too me.

I just figured that we often grab a terry dish towel instead of pot holders so it should work. Guess I'll give it a try. I can always sell them for a few cents at a yard sale!

Feathers 04-07-2008 06:35 PM

I've used old bath towels and wash clothes for backs and padding in potholders. That Terry Cloth works great and washes really nice.

Cathe 04-08-2008 05:25 AM

Thank you all! :)

The binding is NOT perfect, but I wanted to avoid handwork. After all... it's a potholder. I wouldn't want to try to turn these as you describe, though - too small and bulky. So I just did the best I could with machine stitching the binding in place.
