Here are some "in progress" pics of the Spring quilt I am making.

I had to add the Irish Chain/9 patch blocks to make it a king size. I did not have enough and can't get more of the tea cup fabric. Improvisation seems to be my middle name!

I don't know why but the colors in these pics is awful. The yellow is subtle, and the blues that look turquoise are really french blue and royal blue. Oh well!

FASCINATING!!! i love that pattern. is it my imagination or did you change the prairie star just a bit in the corners? it seems different to the drawing. design on the fly. you have great talent. :P :P :P

quiltmaker101 01-26-2008 07:33 PM

Thanks Patrice and all!

No, that is the real Prairie Star. Couldn't find exact same in my EQ5 blocks, so I did the closest, just to figure placement and colors.

cnolan 01-26-2008 07:56 PM

I think of all the combination of colors a quilter could use, blue and yellow are my absolute favorite! That is going to be one beautiful quilt :!:

Very pretty! Can't wait to see the blocks all together! I do the same thing with my Quilt Design Wizard program. I find a layout that I want and then pick up similar blocks. Then I pick approximate fabric colors and/or patterns and you can get a pretty good idea of how things will go together. My problem is that if I want to make a twin size quilt by the time I get done "designing" it is KING size!! :D If anyone is interested in a design program and, like me, don't want to invest a lot of money this one is only about $29 and an awful lot of fun for the money!!

"Improvisation seems to be my middle name!"

And what a fine name it is!

I haven't used the Design Wizard. It sounds less expensive than my EQ5, which was $100 and was a birthday present to myself 2 years ago. Can you download free stash upgrades (4 times a year) like with EQ? I like that feature. Moda, Hoffman, etc. All there to choose from. I have a real good selection to play with now. That is the thing that keeps me interested in staying with EQ. Of course there may come a day when I have to buy the upgraded version!

Lois-nounoe 02-02-2008 04:24 PM

Quiltmaker: Each month they have a new project. You gets so many blocks (1-4 so far) and so many fabrics. You can download the projects and then enter the fabrics or blocks that you want into a "Favorites" file. It's not as extensive as the QE5or6 but for the money you can't beat it. It has a lot of features you can use but I haven't really gotten into all of them. I just designed another quilt by manipulating the layouts and colors to get an idea of how it will look. I just used similar fabric colors and patterns. You can also print out the design, Specifics, and rotory, templete or foundation piecing instructions. It will give you the amount of each fabric and the completed size of the quilt you are designing. It is a great tool for me since I don't need too many toys to play with.

I finished the binding today! The back is a faded blue 108" wide print of hot air balloons.

Again, there is no electric blue in this quilt, it is French blue, but for some reason the color looks weird, taken inside or outside, with or without lights.

It is a King Size. I combined two patterns and added the striped, mitered border.

tlrnhi 05-13-2008 05:35 PM

http://mccallsquilting.com/curiss/1206_prairiestar_promise

Here is a link to the McCall's Quilting pattern I used for the basis. This quilt needed to be a king size, and I did not have any more of the yellow teacup focus fabric left, so to stretch it to a king, I added the 9 patch blocks and arranged all 3 different blocks into a symmetrical pattern. I used EQ5 for the planning, as you can see on page 1 here.

I had made up the Snowball blocks for a different quilt when I saw the Prairie Star Promise in my McCalls issue and they were the same size requirement!

When my friend Laura said she wanted a blue and yellow quilt, and knowing she loves tea and teacups, I told her I had just the quilt in mind!

Missi 05-14-2008 05:41 AM

Just beautiful - I love the colors and the striped border is perfect !!!

Izy 05-14-2008 06:14 AM

That is simply beautiful....lost for words :D

mgshaw 05-14-2008 09:09 AM

Beatiful! Very clever adding the 9 patch block to make it bigger, Love the chain effect it adds. I never would have thought of that I always add more rows or borders(boring  )

Chele 05-14-2008 09:15 AM

A spectacular finish! It was fun watching from your design phase to the finished beauty. Impressive work!

amma 05-14-2008 09:45 AM

Did your friend jump for joy when she received her quilt???? :D :D :D

DA Mayer 05-14-2008 05:09 PM
