Prayer Quilts for the church

6 Attachment(s)
I make prayer quilts for my church. They are to be approx. 40" wide by 60" long. I can use any pattern I want as long as there are prayer ties on the front and a cross on the back. Here are pictures of the latest stash of quilts I turned in. Thank you for viewing.

very nice .. beautiful colors.. but what is a "prayer quilt"?

Wonderful! I make prayer quilts too for our church Prayers and Squares group. I love the idea of the cross on the back. Are those appliquéd? For Katiedid2. . . If Janet's church does them like ours, we put the threads in them ready to be tied. But then when someone is sick or has another need for prayer, we put a quilt on the patio and people pray for that person as they tie one of the knots. When the recipient gets the quilt, he knows many people have prayed for him.

A prayer quilt is for someone who is in need of our prayers--do to an illness, loss, injury, etc. The quilt is placed in the church and members and friends say prayers for the receiver. Some quilts are only put together with ties and while people are saying a prayer they also tie a knot to "hold the prayer into the quilt." It is okay if a prayer quilt is machine quilted, but the ties have to still be on it as well. When the receiver gets the quilt and they snuggle up in it, they find comfort in knowing God is close as well as their family and friends and it helps them get through their difficult times.

They are beautiful.

I hand sew the crosses on the back. I usually make them out of the same color as the quilt binding.

I am certain the recipients feel the power put in them/

What a lovely church tradition. I will have to remember that. Your quilts are lovely and I know as you were piecing them, you were also putting those people in your thoughts. What a great service. Thank you.

Daylesewblessed 04-04-2015 06:08 AM

Your crosses on the back are a strong witness - wonderful!

southernmema 04-04-2015 08:04 AM

What a special ministry! The quilts are wonderful! I'm sure they bring much comfort to those who receive them.

quilterpurpledog 04-04-2015 08:52 AM

Lovely way to reach out to those in your midst who need to know that others love them and pray for their comfort in their time of need. We know God hears and answers prayers and this just a tangible way of expressing shared concern. Great quilts.

coopah 04-04-2015 08:56 AM

Our church makes these, too. We add a spiral bound book with the names of those who tied a knot and prayed for the recipient.

susiqca 04-04-2015 09:20 AM

What a beautiful ministry you have. I'm sure these are loved and appreciated.

#1piecemaker 04-04-2015 09:40 AM

Your prayer quilts are so nice!! You did a great job on them!

matraina 04-04-2015 12:21 PM

I like that idea. At our church, the ladies meet and work on their quilts. If it's a crocheted one, each person, when their quilt is finished, gives a length of yarn to someone else making one to incorrporate in theeir design or edging. The priest or deacon blesses them before they're given out.

By the way, Charisma, who useed to be on this board a lot, has a diagram of a quilted cross she puts on thre back.

Your prayer quilts are beautiful! As a recipient of a prayer quilt when I was gravely ill they are a wonderful example to represent how prayers help those in need.

Heard of prayer quilts but, didn't know about the ties on front or cross on back! Will definitely include those in prayer quilt I am making for a church member who has breast cancer! What a wonderful idea! Beautiful quilts!

sewn3w 05-18-2015 05:51 PM

Very nice Janet. Recipients will be so blessed. I just finished 2 prayer quilts for my church as well. Will be meeting Thursday to plan out more. we do them the same way but put a tag on the back with a verse the church name and the person's name.
