It ends up that turning the iron off instead of relying on the automatic shutoff is very good advice.

I guess the good thing is that it already fell on the floor and cracked the water tank, so instead of trying to remove it, I might just throw it away.

QuiltnNan 08-21-2019 12:09 PM

good lesson to learn

Tartan 08-21-2019 12:13 PM

Watch out for plastic bags to close to the ironing board also.:)

cashs_mom 08-21-2019 12:15 PM

Yikes! I'm glad it wasn't a new iron!

zozee 08-21-2019 12:31 PM

It could have beenl so much worse! Glad nothing caught fire!

juliasb 08-21-2019 03:25 PM

I bet the burning plastic smelled really "great" -:( . Yepper I would be tossing them both too. No way to take a chance with this iron again.

themadpatter 08-21-2019 05:30 PM

Surprisingly, we never smelled it when it happened.

nativetexan 08-21-2019 06:21 PM

that may Pop right off though. hopefully.

What I was thinking. Thanks for posting this. It reminds us all to be careful. BrendaK

Can you tell I am a worry wort? .... All I could think is: It is all fun and games until some one gets hurt, or You dodged a bullet here. But, really, I am so glad you are safe......

A1penny 08-22-2019 02:58 AM

You've made us all more aware of what our iron is up to.....!

SillySusan 08-22-2019 03:20 AM

That's scary!

That's the reason I have my iron on a serge protector in a socket that's connected to the wall switch. A lamp is attached also. If the lamp is on so is the iron. If the lamp is off, so is the iron. Then I check it twice before I leave the room!

Glad you are safe.

connecting the lamp is a great idea, thanks

luvstoquilt 08-22-2019 04:26 AM

I do the same Sillysusan! I also never leave the kitchen when I boil eggs or put the teapot on the stove.

SusieQOH 08-22-2019 04:47 AM

Oh no!
Glad the bottle was the only thing damaged!

trolleystation 08-22-2019 04:57 AM

Good laugh for today...….we all know how stupid feels.

Doggramma 08-22-2019 05:46 AM

Oh wow. That looks like something that would happen to me....

TheMerkleFamily 08-22-2019 06:10 AM

Yikes! So glad it wasn't worse!

Thank you SillySusan for the great 'lamp' idea!

annievee 08-22-2019 08:24 AM

I never trust the auto on/off. Just make sure iron in unplugged !

sue.ross.8782 08-22-2019 10:33 AM

Oops. I can't quilt if I don't have an iron. You'll have to replace it quickly.:D

Batik 54 08-22-2019 01:34 PM

My take on it. Laugh and embrace your work of art!:)

Sandra-P 08-23-2019 03:52 AM

Thank you for posting, good reminder and I will be more careful.

#1piecemaker 08-23-2019 04:35 AM

Ohhhh my! that could have been a disaster! I will certainly be more careful.

bearisgray 08-23-2019 04:47 AM

Also - if an iron has an automatic shut-off - when the iron is moved, it will heat up again if one did not actually turn it off.

I usually - or so I thought - click the iron to "off" - so I set a cold iron on carpet - and the iron heated up and melted the carpet.

Now DH put an extension cord up so that it is easier to plug and unplug the iron in - and I always unplug it now when I am not using it.

carolynjo 08-23-2019 06:06 AM

I love your advice! I'll never forget when a pot of eggs boiled dry and the eggs exploded! Hours later, I Finally finished cleaning the ceiling!

Marge611 08-23-2019 06:54 AM

You made my day. That really is funny and I really needed a laugh today. It is exactly something that I would do. Yes, I do feel sorry that it happened though. Guess you just have to look at the bright side. You get to buy a new iron!

llong0233 08-23-2019 07:00 AM

Thanks for sharing. Very funny and sort of inspiring. No matter what, we keep on quilting.

Rhonda K 08-23-2019 01:00 PM

Thanks for the safety reminder! I see a commercial in there somewhere. Hopefully, you have a new iron now.

Jordan 08-25-2019 09:42 AM

Oh no!! Lesson learned I guess and glad it wasn't any worse.

nativetexan 08-25-2019 10:45 AM

my iron shuts off while I"m ironing! every time! well it beeps and will shut off if I don't lift it up an upright, then continue ironing a bit more. someone made mine wrong! otherwise it is a good iron. will shut off but i always punch the button to go down and show blue. means off. Then when completely done in sewing room, i unplug from extension cord.

QUILT4JOY 08-25-2019 10:45 AM

That's "art" worthy. Display it! Seriously! It would even be fun to enter it in an art show. It's almost an Andy Warhol. Lol

Grandma Peg 08-25-2019 08:57 PM

Thanks for the reminder.

Ariannaquilts 08-26-2019 08:04 PM

At first I didn't realize what I was looking at and I thought OMG she did what I did, but then I saw what it is. Years ago I had just bought a new sewing machine and out of pure laziness I setup my iron right beside it. Very convenient for sewing those seams and didn't hardly have to move. Well of course the iron somehow fell over once I had turned it off but before it had time to cool so I wound up with a slight melted area on my machine. Didn't really bother me or the woman I wound up selling it to!

materialworld 08-27-2019 09:17 AM

Wowsers!! Lucky this didn't turn into something worse.

rusty quilter 08-28-2019 11:50 AM

Laughing....we are all so "involved" with our projects...we just sometimes forget!

mindless 08-29-2019 11:03 AM

Wow. Thanks for posting this.
It's a good reminder.

Now, it's also a great piece of modern art.
