I've been working on this for two weeks I think, it's the design in my avatar picture. The 36 Birds In The Air blocks are done and the Jacob's Ladder blocks are ready to sew the rows together. I'm also about half done with the center applique, one bird and the flower pot left to do.

I sewed one of the blocks together to see how it was going and to my delight it doesn't even need to be squared up. The lines and diagonal are just about perfect. :D

I'm doing this one with pressing the seams open. What a pain and burned fingers.

I am so glad to finally see it in some fabric, I bet you are too! It is going to be even better than your pattern I can just tell. :)

Loving your colors for the quilt. Keep us posted.

pittsburgpam 03-08-2010 08:12 AM

Of course I'll do updates. :P I finished all the Jacob's Ladder blocks last night, they still need to be pressed. Someone will have to pick me up off the floor if they all turn out as good as the first one!

I take the center applique to work with me and work on it during breaks so I hope to have it done this week. I forgot that I still have to do the little berries on the bottom of the stems.

The only blocks left to do are the 4 baskets and I'll start getting the fabric cut tonight.

Looks like it is coming along nicely. Keep up the good work.

I was thinking this morning that it is akin to magic. What we imagine can become real. It is a uniquely human trait to create something out of nothingness.

Can't wait to see the end result. Looks as if it will be a beautiful quilt.

littlehud 03-08-2010 01:05 PM

That is beautiful. You have been doing a great job on it.

pittsburgpam 03-08-2010 01:15 PM

Thank you. Worked on the applique today and got half of the pot done. What a difference better thread makes! I got two sets of BOBBS from Superior Threads, all sorts of colors. That's Bottom Line thread on bobbins for hand work. The thin, fine thread disappears on applique.

It's nice and smooth and just glides through the fabric.

shopbelt 03-08-2010 01:38 PM

It's going to be a beauty!

I just love the one fourth inch foot on my machine for this is the final results - a perfect square - which was always hard for me to do. - nice work - hope all goes well with the rest of the quilt - anxious to see it done.

Elisabrat 03-09-2010 04:50 AM

I fell in love with this when I saw you post the what do you think I should do pics.. I even saved one to my quilts I would like to do folder I loved it that much. Now seeing the work in progress its going to be stunning. I hope you can share the pattern and dimensions one day. I am dying to see the finished work. YOu dont need sleep. Hurry up hurry up! Also pressing seams out instead of to the side.. this is helping how? I seriously would love to know how that affects your block. I have always pressed to the side as my class was told it makes a seam stronger?

GailG 03-09-2010 04:52 AM

Wow! That is some precision! Congratulations!!

pittsburgpam 03-09-2010 07:55 AM

How has pressing the seams open affected my outcome? Well, I pressed all the blocks last night and every one of them came out just about like that one. I bet out of 8 blocks that I will have just a few tiny, tiny slivers of squaring up to do. Would pressing them to the side have had the same result? Close but, probably not.

There's debate about whether it really makes it stronger and opinions that it's "old school" and based more on hand sewing the pieces.

I did a pattern but I am finding corrections as I go. I have to re-do the basket part since I found last night that I was not going to mess with 2 7/8" pieces, 7 3/8" pieces, etc. I re-drew the block and will try it tonight.
