I posted on another thread that I found a family heirloom quilt that my MIL made in 1972. I decided I wanted to replicate the quilt by making triplicates for the surviving kids in the family.

So to do this I made one of my own just so I could get an idea as to how she made the quilt. I used fabrics out of my stash and spent most of Saturday sorting, cutting ,and arranging the blocks.

This morning I pulled out one of my treadles and I set up in the entryway and living room and started sewing it together. And the blocks that she had out of line I did the same thing with this one. As you can see from a fabric or two that it will be my quilt!! :lol: :lol:

I am going to sandwich it and SITD then I am going to tie it like the original with orange yarn.

You did great. I love that treadle fabric. Great job.

That was such a sweet thing to do! I'm guessing you had more than a few "reach-back" moments while you stitched this up, huh? I've got some of that treadle fabric too! And I've got a couple of old machines, Billy, but none of them look as good as your Red Eye! That's a beauty, for sure. I'll always love sewing on a 66...electric or treadle, that machine just makes me happy.

I was kinda nervous bringing that treadle in the entryway. That floor is Marble and is the original floor that was put in 1951. I love marble floors but it is a bear to take care of.

I really had an opportunity to visit with my MIL just by working on my copy of her quilt. Going over the original one with a fine tooth comb taking measurements and feeling the materials really got to me. Its just a shame she could not be here to tell me the story behind it and why she did certain things that she did.

When it comes time to recreate the original with hopefully the same if not very similar fabrics that will be the quilt with the most meaning behind it!

Valerie really wishes I could have met her mother, but I am getting to know her now and she is speaking to me through what she made. And I think she is talking to her daughter also...........

Well I have it sandwiched, quilted (SITD), and bound, now all I have to do is go to Micheals and pick up some Orange yarn to tie the the quilt like my MIL's.

I really enjoyed using my 66, it was the first time I was able to use it since I have cleaned it up to preserve the machine. But I doubt it will ever be used again its too nice to take a chance on hurting the decals or finish. And its the Satin finished nickle plated version which makes it ever more special. :thumbup:

I will post photos of the finished quilt tomorrow.

Here are the photos of the finished quilt ready for the label to be hand sewn on and tossed in the wash.

I have a whole new respect for the older quilts and all of the work that went into them. "Hand tied Quilt" it sounds easy enough, but it is far from it.

I put in over 275 knots in the quilt......... :shock:

And just think the original was all hand sewn and hand tied, it probably took her a months just to make it where it only took 3 days for me.
