Purple Bargello

1 Attachment(s)
My cat Hot Rod and I just finished a purple Bargello quilt top. We are both quite pleased with it. The pattern is called Serenity Bargello by Northcott. It is free online, and even has a video to show how to make it.

What is funny is that I already made a purple Bargello almost like this. It also has eleven purples and one white. It was the first Bargello I had ever made, and I guess I temporarily forgot. :) It wasn't until I put the pieces on my design wall that I thought, "Wait a minute, have I already done this?" I thought it was funny, but I really like the way this looks so I didn't let it bother me. It is a cheerful quilt and I needed to work on something cheerful and comfortable.

I am addicted to Bargello quilts. I have made 16 so far. I think that these quilts make me look like I am a better quilter than I am.

Thanks for looking.

Dina

I think you're a better quilter than you think you are, too. Your quilt is beautiful. Any tips for doing a bargello?

Very nice, and nice of Hot Rod to let you help him with it. He looks justifiably proud as he sits on his purple throne.

The main hint I could give for making a Bargello is that if you are following a pattern, read the instructions carefully and organize your fabric. (I don't always follow a pattern, and that is fun too.). If you have never made a Bargello, I recommend starting the way I did. Make a place mat first. Eileen Wright has a book called Twist and Turn Bargellos... It has about 10 patterns and at the back of that book is a set of instructions for making a placemat. She assumes a beginner is doing it, and she shows what to do, step by step. I made one of those and then made Surf Song, which is also in her book. Actually, she has two books, but you want the first one. It has an orange and yellowish Bargello on the front. I think the second book says it is Book 2 of Twist and Turn Bargellos. I got my book from Amazon.

Then, ask questions here if you have them. Quilters on this site held my hand the whole time. But, warning, Bargellos quilts may be addictive. :)

Yes, I post less often. The new format is harder for me to use. I am visually impaired and I have to enlarge it all so much that it is just awkward. Plus the colors hardly have enough contrast for me. Thanks for missing me. :)

Missed you also but glad you are back. We can always count on a purple wonder LOL and this was no exception. I have bought my share of duplicate patterns, but don't think I have made two alike.................yet. Hang in there and thanks for the eye candy.

I love your 2nd purple bargello quilt. It is beautiful and you certainly are a wonderful sewer and I think you are the bargello queen for making so many bargellos. Thank you for sharing. I would love to make a bargello but the pattern still intimidates me

Jordan 11-06-2020 07:15 AM

Forgot to thank Hot Rod for being your quilt helper. I see he even made the calendar that is hanging on the wall. He is famous!!!

I love bargellos but I doubt I could ever make 16 of them. You must have amazing fortitude. Your quilt here looks perfect in every way. You have a talent for this.

Love your quilt! You make amazing bargello quilts. Question: Is that Hot Rod on your calendar? It sure looks like him.

SallyS 11-12-2020 10:43 AM

Ordered the book from Amazon and can hardly wait until it comes. Thank you again for all your advice and sharing!

How neat! I am glad I was helpful. I hope you enjoy this type of quilt as much as I do. I just made a cat-sized quilt out of the scraps left over from this quilt. Now Hot Rod and I have matching quilts.

Thanks, everyone, for the sweet compliments. Hot Rod and I enjoy hearing them. :). And I had not noticed that the cat on my calendar looks just like Hot Rod!!! How neat is that. Thanks to two of you for pointing that out.

Your quilt is beautiful and I absolutely love your cat!!

This is a very nice bargello. I've been bitten by the bargello bug and I'm trying not to make too many. I've made 3 in a row already. Then Jordan Fabrics on utube showed one that I would like to make and then....here you come with another I would like to try. Bad girl!!!! Is this pattern still available on the website?

nanac 11-22-2020 09:46 AM

Donna Jordan has a good tutorial for bargello quilt on YouTube. She uses 9 different fabrics, and sews squares, then sews the squares into rows. It seems easy enough even for me to do, but haven't done one yet. My biggest problem is trying to figure out what coordinating fabric "goes" with each of the fabrics.
