Suzy -- do go for it. Log cabin blocks are amazingly forgiving. Giving away secrets here, but my quilt has some seriously wonky strips. I used some 2 inch strips, some 1 and some 1 1/4 plus some 1 1/2. Just whatever was in my scraps pile from previous quilts. I don't pre-cut the strips -- sew first, then cut, then trim to size. The only rules I had for myself going in were that I would not have two consecutive logs out of the same fabric, but that each layer was a unified color. And even that rule, I broke a few times.

Seriously, this is such a flexible block, you can just play and mess around until you like the finished effect.
