Queen Size Quilt and Shams completed! Quilting Questions
5 Attachment(s)
I had asked for advice on how to quilt this quilt in a previous post. Quilt is finished! I love the swirled quilt pattern in the white blocks. They mimic the swirls in the colored fabric so well. (71 of those squares!). I also wish I had the setting triangle quilt pattern in a larger size. It is a little small for the size of the triangles. I did SITD on the rails and 9 patch. I had some difficulty with the SITD. It is a large queen size quilt, and hard to support through my DSM. I did this on my kitchen table for extra support. I used a SITD foot. Maybe it would have been better and easier to use a walking foot? Also, I did the SITD first, and then hooped and quilted the white squares. Anyone have experience with the best order in which to quilt when using different quilting methods?

Wish I had added a flange to the envelope pillow shams to better frame the top and bottom of the star. Overall, I am very happy with the quilt. It is going on our bed in my daughter's house. |
Wow and on a dsm! pretty awesome.

Wow, your work is beautiful - I love this quilt and the quilting! I only have a dsm, I've never done such a big project. Impressive!

It turned out great! I always use a walking foot when quilting in the ditch :)
Very nice and the quilting is fantastic. Can't believe you did the quilting on your kitchen table-wonderful work
Wonderful job on quilting.
Your quilting is just super! I too use a walking foot when quilting in the ditch-much easier. I really like the motif you used in the white areas. Was that a stencil?
I love the quilt and the quilting, such a wonderful pattern.
I just love this quilt. The colors are fantastic and so is your work.
I will try using a walking foot instead of a SITD foot next time. Thanks for the feedback. EKUW, the quilting in the white squares and setting triangles was done using the embroidery attachment on my DSM. Quilted in the hoop.

Beautiful quilt and quilting, colors and pattern are great too.
Beautifully done!
liking this quilt! And loved how you quilted those white blocks--almost the same design as in the fabrics.
Enjoy your lovely quilt. I like the colors you chose. Lovely quilting also. Your photos are nice also.
Beautiful quilt and I love your swirl quilting. I have made a queen size on a DSM also, it is quite a handfull. I used a walking foot first and sort of stabilized the blocks throughout the quilt then went back and did the freemotion part. In theory, it made the back smoother. But that's only theory. I really like the grey setting blocks in your quilt.

Beautiful quilt and the quilting is lovely and just perfect for the quilt design. I hope your really enjoy using the quilt when visiting your daughter.

Sorry no help with the quilting advice. Just wanted to say what a great quilt it is. The colors are so happy
Bright and beautiful, great job on the quilting, thanks for sharing.
What a great quilt!
Pretty! How nice to decorate your own room at your daughter’s house
Beautiful quilt! I would have done the quilting in the same order that you did it. First SITD to stabilize and then the motifs in the squares.

I too use a walking foot to do SITD. It also started to come out better when I realized I wasn't really stitching "in the ditch" before. Now I make sure to press seams to one side on the back and then stitch in the "valley" on the surface of the quilt. (Not the side I pressed seams to if that makes sense.)

It looks Great!!! Nice job!
