Queen Sized T Shirt Quilt DONE!

4 Attachment(s)
Here's the quilt that nearly killed me. Hard to piece, VERY hard to quilt... it was just a challenge from start to finish. I even had a friend praying for me while I was quilting it, I had THAT much trouble. But, tra la, tra lee, it's done now so I can love it. It goes to it's owner tomorrow, where she will gift it to her son for Christmas. He has no idea she's been saving his team shirts for this since he was a little kid. He's 25 now. I wish I could see him open it! What a great Mom, huh?

These are the things I learned about quilting a T Shirt quilt:
1) Use 40 weight thread
2) Use a size 90/14 TOPSTITCHING needle
3) Drop your feed dogs, but then increase your foot pressure so there is less "bouncing" when the needle goes in and out of the quilt.
4) Don't stitch on top of plastic or vinyl shapes or numbers, instead outline them.

Thanks to the kind board members who helped me with my learning curve.

Great job! Tackling a t-shirt quilt is one of my next projects. Appreciate your tips!

Great T shirt quilt!

ManiacQuilter2 12-10-2015 03:17 PM

Glad you got yours done. I had done a few queen size T-shirt on commission over a decade ago so I know how heavy they can be. Everyone needs to know NOT to sew thru the vinyl/plastic when quilting one. You could potentially damage your machine.

You should be very proud! It turned out Great! Getting all those different sized images put together in such a pleasing way, custom quilting it. Wow!

Someone is going to love this! You did a great job and I know it is not easy to quilt one of these. I did my DGS's on my dsm and I thought it was like wrestling a bear! But I won, as did you.

I made full-size T-shirt quilts for my sons several years ago. They can be somewhat difficult to deal with, but both my sons loved theirs.
