Do I need to quilt something on the 2 thin strips between the 2 larger strips? There's about 6 inches between the 2 at the widest point. Don't really know what I could quilt there so if I do need to do something...any suggestions?

Depends on the batting. It should say on your batting how far apart you quilt

Seems you would need *something* in there ... maybe a bunch of little holly berries every few inches?

Not sure which batting I used but I'd guess it's probably about 8 inches since that's what I try to buy.

Yes, you do... but also check your batting instructions.. but you could SID... stitch in the ditch or do a wavy on the seams.. but you need something to hold the top, batting and backing together.
Nice quilting so far.

no unquilted area should be larger than your closed fist

It depends on what you are using for batting whether or not you need to put some quilting in there. If the bag says you do need some quilting, why not just go down between the two strips --In the ditch??

Thanks, Judy. I agree it does need something.

something like ribbon candy. tight curves. i tried to copy a pic in here but couldn't. the hard colorful ribbon candy I remember from my childhood. it's still out there. i never liked it myself but it was pretty.
and i would do more in the green also. the top one you could just do scallop type curves on either side and the larger green border at least do one more holly leaf below where necessary to help fill in more. that would make it areas of three holly leaves going across.

I think it needs something for visual effect.

i would quilt something there.

my first thought was candy canes you could place them to form hearts - i'd draw it out first to make sure the candy cane doesn't get lost when you place them into hearts.

you could do mittens instead or alternate both ideas

I agree

I think it does need something even SID but another motif that alternates side to side would be nice

You could stitch in the ditch. It is really pretty.

I like mittens could add hat and scarf too

Or maybe some snowflakes would look nice! :)

Thanks. That will be an easy way to remember. :-)

your batting is what determines the width. it should have a recommendation on the label. if you don't know what to quilt there, how about just a SID?

grandma7 10-27-2011 11:22 AM

These are all great ideas for filling in. I like the idea of the closed fist as a measure. Thanks, jaciqltznok!
