I made this quilt last year. It is not that difficult if you follow the directions carefully. Lots of Y seams.

Looks like paper piecing is the way to go with this and thank you for sharing.
Have a Blessed day

Your version is wonderful! I love your patriotic take on it.

I was familiar with Edyta and her patterns, but sometimes she had so much beige in them that I just passed them by (even though I do try to look at everything in terms of value instead of color).

But after really looking at this and her other patterns, I really appreciate how well they're designed.

It's not a cookie cutter pattern using a jelly roll with sashing, which sometimes seems to be ubiquitous these days, and bore me to tears.

Designing those as large octagons blocks is really pretty slick.

As for the y-seams, even if you've never done one before, by the third one you don't even think about it anymore (I was in sheer panic on my first Lone Star).
I see at least 16 in the block alone, before joining them to the square and each other.
LOVE it!!

I think if they still freak someone out, the pattern can be easily modified by making those Log Cabin blocks into striped triangles (which is what I thought they were from the op's picture) - you still get the split coloring but you can then make as regular blocks (the stars and alternates).

I'm just now watching an episode of The Quilt Show from last year with Edyta as the featured guest.

They just held up a copy of her book - and guess which quilt is on the cover?
