I had my DH put up a long traverse curtain rod high on the wall in my sewing room, and then I used an old king size sheet, put the drape pins in the top edge, hung it up, and look what I got!!! A HUGE design wall that I can pull to one side. It covers the door when it's pulled full out. It works great!! We can hang lots of small quilts on it, or one really large one. The rod cost about $40.
Drawn to let the door open. Fully pulled out |
Great! I use the back side of a tablecloth for mine - works great too!

That would work, too!! Thanks for the idea.

What a great idea! I love that door too by the way. What a cool looking room. Is the whole house like that?

Incredible idea! I got hubby busy right away and did something similar in my small sewing room (he was quite happy to do it, I think he hates it when I am forever laying out/leaving blocks & threads all over the bed! So, thank you!

What a great idea. When I first saw the pic I thought maybe you did what I did yesterday. Don't have a design wall but pinned my quilt blocks to the curtains so I could stand back and take a look. Kind of goofy I know but it worked as a temporary solution.

Hi, I was wondering if a pull up blind would work and put the back of a tablecloth on the front of it. This way when you needed to could just roll it up and out of the way and maybe put a valance over the top to hide the hardware. This would work on a big closet area? What do you think?

Good idea!

Too cute.

Oh, make a design wall. You will love having one. Mine is the most used item in my sewing room.

Wouldn't a large cut of batting work? I have one hanging on my wall and the fabric sticks to it just fine, no pins needed. I like the rod idea.

A back of a plastic table cloth that has the backing like batting would work but it seems like a lot of work to hang the rod.

This is how I double my design wall space. I have the standard design wall of foam insulation board, mine is covered with a product called "Block Butler" a 72" X 72" sticky fabric. It's amazing and if it ever starts losing the sticky ability, you just spritz it with water! Then over that I hang the sheet on the rod for a second design wall.
Happy Quiting! |
where do you get block butler?
|
Hi Irma, I know I bought it online. Just not sure which. But here is their homepage:

I love the idea of the commercially made vanishing design wall but don't like a few things about them - - price, shipping charge and, most importantly, size. I would be willing to pay the price but think S$H is way too high. Would like to go to a show where they are demo'ing so I could avoid S$H. However, the design portion is only 54" wide so could only use it for small items or a portion of your larger quilt.
I would love to hear from those of you who have purchased one, how large of a quilt did you use it for, what is your opinion of it after using it for awhile. particularly, does it conveniently roll up and down with blocks on it. If you've made your own vanishing design wall, how large of a shade did you use and how is it working for you? Thanks for getting this topic stRted again, Crafty Bear. |
