Loretta had mentioned making a pillow like case to keep our quilts in, so I made a "quilt case" for my daughter's quilt.

Maybe I'm silly, but to help keep track of the "case" when the quilt is in use I'm thinking perhaps it can go on a pillow on her bed. Maybe I'm thinking to much into it. :D The fabric of the case is also the quilt backing. I'm seriously considering (and bought enough fabric to do so) pulling the back to the front for the binding.

I think that quilt case is a great idea. I've turned the backing to the front for binding a few times. All I know is to be VERY careful at the corners. It will look very nice that way, in my opinion.

The first quilt my mom ever made was for me when I was little and it had blocks of applique "patchy" animals all over it, and she turned the backing onto the front to bind it, and I always felt it really drew it all back together. Mom did mention that if I use that technique I will have "more" wear on my binding, but if that happens I can always add a real binding later right? :D

Hey. great idea. Is there a trick to making pillow cases? pattern?

I didn't use a pattern, rather I took a length of fabric about 5' x 1.5' (yes that's five foot because you sew the short parts just like on a pillow, and then wrong fabric sides together sew up the sides. If I was making a real pillow case I would have made it bigger more like 6' X 2', but you could measure your pillow to be sure.

I sewed the applique before I sewed the case together (I just measured up about 5"-10" and worked in that space) so that the backside (ugly) part of my work wouldn't show, but you wouldn't have to do that.

I wanted the pink ribbon from one of my daughter's dressed to mark off the applique area so that had to be pinned on before I sewed the "tab". If that's not as clear as mud I looked up a free pillowcase making website for you here. http://www.alternative%2Dwindows.com/pillow%2Dcases.htm That's just one if you google pillow case pattern free, you can find lots of other more complex patterns.

It might not sound like it but it was easy! If you have the fabric besure to give it a try! :D

Thankyou, I glad I heard about making it, because if I'd waited it wouldn't match, I'm thinking every quilt I make I'll buy enough fabric to do it. My linen closet is pretty small and I'm always packing things in there, so this will hopefully protect it. Though I'm certain by the time this quilt ends up in the closet I'll be much more careful (in theory anyway).

Some great ideas...and thats a beautiful quilt. I make a bag for each gift quilt and so far most say "only one pillow case" geezz :roll: :wink: :D

How Funny Ruth! I'm sure a second case could be added, but knowing the people I love I'd have to make sure the quilt came in the case or else they would always store them apart.

I really am liking the quilt case, as it's been living with my sewing stuff. It's currently holding the two quilt tops I have that are indentical, though very soon I'll be basing up the first one (which is to live in that case) to quilt it. Yes I know call me crazy but it was all of you and your wonderful works of art that convinces me I can!
