Ok guy's, Gabe told me he wants me to make him a NY Giants quilt for Christmas so been my youngest and last child I have to spoil him and of course he just got his first report card and he has A & B so he deserves it.
I got the fabric and the backing only problem is I could not get enough of the fabric with the NY Giants logo. So my idea is to make:
-a big helmet with some of the royal blue as the center of the quilt
-cut out the helmets and the name out of the logo fabric and applique to white squares
-cut the foot ball and the numbers out of the other fabric and applique to white, red and blue squares.
-the last fabric will be my backing.
Does that make sense????
I welcome suggestions

My oldest DD is a HUGE NYG fan. She lives in her NYG sweatshirt and would love a quilt like this. Can't wait to see pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Sounds great Craftybug. Or, if you didn't' want to do that much applique, you could fussy cut squares of the football, helmets, etc and add red/white or blue borders to get to the size of square you want, then sew it all together.
(But then, I don't have a clue how to applique) I know that anything you do will be great and your DS will love it. Congrats to him on A's & B's. Tell him to keep up the good work!

Bevanger 11-08-2008 06:51 AM

Marcia 11-08-2008 10:05 AM

I think that sounds like a great idea!! He is going to LOVE this!!!

pennyswings 11-08-2008 10:27 AM

Craftybug I like the fabric very much. I think your idea is great but I also like LoriJ's suggestion on the fussy cutting with borders. Please whatever you decide post the pictures when you are done. :D

Craftybug 11-08-2008 07:37 PM

OK guy's, I got my big helmet cut and pinned for the center of the quilt. The helmet is 29 by 29 and is on a white square 32 by 32. I didn't think I could do it without a pattern but I did it YEAH. The rest should be a piece of cake, I HOPE :(
So how you like?????????

mountain-moma 11-08-2008 07:50 PM

Great helmet !! You are soooooooo clever. I would have just done the squares, etc. I like your idea a lot. And I bet he will too. Give him a pat on the back from me for all those good grades.

Oh dear, I'd better not let my fiancé see that Giants fabric! We've something of a rivalry going... he's a Giants fan, I'm a Patriots fan, and we each pick on the other's team with great relish :P He sees that fabric, and that'll be the end of that--I'll never live it down, having to sew a Giants-themed something or other :P

Sounds like you have a plan in mind...good luck...xmas is coming soon...

Craftybug 11-10-2008 04:56 AM

OK, the helmet parts and grill are all applique on. Now comes the tricky part, designing the surrounding blocks. I'm waiting for my muse to wake up. I should have an idea by the end of the day.

Keep you paper and pencil ready. Those ideas come when you least expect them. Good luck. Great work so far.

Yes, start with a center with the helmet or logo from a tee shirt. Can buy at Goodwill or where ever. Here is a picture of one my daughter made for her brother in law with lots of help from me. It is reversible with Notre Dame on the front.

This is the Notre Dame side

This is the Colts side what you might like to do.
we embroidered little footballs here and there and stitched in the ditch where we could for the quilting. it is huge and he loves it.

Thanks Bernadette, now you are waking up my muse. You see the logo fabric you have around the center piece, I could not get my hands on enough Giants fabric to do that so I was thinking of cutting out the name and helmet logos and putting them on separate squares and then plain red white and blue squares or 9 patch blocks using the names and helmets on the center square of the 9 patch.
What do you think????

Bernadette Harwood 11-10-2008 07:01 PM

Sounds wonderful too me. He will love it. Your fabrics are great.

kd124 11-10-2008 11:54 PM

When you make your label, you might want to mention that they were Super Bowl XLII champions. If you machine embroider you could put info on that center block under the helmet.

more facts--Feb. 3, 2008 final score Giants 17, Patriots 14

Craftybug 11-11-2008 04:35 AM

Thanks Kathy that is a awesome idea. I'm hoping we go to the Super Bowl again this year against the Titans.

kd124 11-11-2008 07:15 PM

You're welcome.

vicki reno 11-26-2008 04:57 AM

I love the colors! Great quilt!

Craftybug 11-26-2008 05:09 AM

Thank you girls you are making me blush  .
I could have arranged the squares better but the lack of space and the fact that the creative side of my brain was not willing to help this week with everything that I had going on at my house I just kind of piece it together. Gabe loves it and I told him that I will try to get it quilted for him this weekend.
I have enough squares and backing fabric left so I'm making him two pillows to go with it.

sewsewquilter 11-26-2008 06:02 AM

Looks great! It really turned out cute!
