Quilt design for my great-nephew
1 Attachment(s)
My niece's son picked out this fabric called Big Red so I needed to come up with how to use it before ordering it. I found that there is a panel of the 6"x6" small tractors and the International Harvester logos. Each panel has 24 squares. I also found a panel with 4 large pictures and border pieces with the grass, sky, and tractors.
Each small tractor panel has 8 red logos, 6 white logos, 6 pictures of one tractor and 4 each of two other tractors. This design uses all the logos and 4 each of the three small tractors. I decided to get two panels of the large tractors so that there is enough border strips to put on the top and bottom. I'll just give my niece the other 4 tractor pictures and she can frame them or make pillows. The red and the beige fabric are part of the collection and they have tractors on them. The blue/green/zig-zag stripe is also in the collection. |
Oooooh, I really like this!

Terrific layout! This is going to be an awesome quilt!

Thanks. I think it's cute. :) I wanted the 6"x6" pieces around the edge but didn't know what to do to fill it in with. Then I saw the fences in the pictures!! I adjusted the whole quilt size so that the fences could be 6"x10" and it all fits the space. It won't be hard to do with a bias strip maker for the rails. Just sew them onto the beige and put a white piece on each end.

Neat quilt plan! How old is your great nephew? This is a design that could be used for young or old.

He's two years old and I guess he likes tractors!

This is going to be just perfect. Please post your progress.

I noticed that the top and bottom fences looked odd. Found out that they were 8.5" wide instead of the 10" they should be. I adjusted the border dimensions, which means adjusting the body dimensions, which means adjusting everything else too.
Finally got all of the pieces in the size I want. Everything is finished size to the 1", which is really convenient for cutting. I had to make the top and bottom border strips an inch wider but they are bordered in red on the panel anyway so there should be fudging room there without it looking strange. I have all the fabric requirements including a 2 1/4" border on the outside of the quilt so it accounts for binding. The dimensions are 70" x 88". |
That will be treasured for many years!!
