quilt for DG
1 Attachment(s)
This is quick and easy quilt, the background is black per DG wish. It is quite big, 86x98. I am not sure how I am going to quilt it yet, most likely just straight lines and I am searching for a thread to quilt with, all I have are light colors. Any suggestions as to what thread color to use will be appreciated. Should it be black for the black and color for colors? I looked at variegated thread but did not like it that much.
thank you. |
If it were me, I would use a variegated thread, it would really pop on the black. Beautiful quilt.
It looks modern so I might quilt straight lines in black. I know black thread on black can be difficult to see but if you are just quilting straight lines you don't need to see. Neat, graphic looking quilt top!
Neat and colorful top! I'd suggest black thread too. You won't be seeing much of it~
as I am looking for a thread on the web, I see color 'charcoal' and I think that I like it better then black. I am still looking for a backing, too. Hard to find and decide for a boy's quilt.
I really like your quilt! I can see how making a decision as to quilting thread would be hard, though, and I'm wondering if you could just avoid crossing any of the colors since any color you choose would look jarring. That way you could use black in a linear pattern in the large diagonal areas and "triangle" in the black half-squares leaving the colors alone.

Variegated would pop the nlack
very lovely quilt
Your quilt is pretty...no clue as to how to quilt.
Yes, I'd use black also. Cool quilt!
I love the idea of variegated thread. Such a pretty quilt!
On this I would use black....variegated to me would take away from the colorful triangles
Wonderful quilt.
I am sure however you quilt and the color of thread will only make it more beautiful.
I have done a couple of quilts with similar colors, black background. I used black thread and for yours I would stitch in the ditch around the colored triangles. I did a kind of spiral but it was squared rather than a circle, if that makes sense.
Honestly, the quilting didn't show up a lot, but still I liked it. I didn't really want the quilting to be the "star of the show". Your quilt is really nice. I love the brights on the black. I |
Beautiful quilt! She will love it!
This is really awesome. I like artsyone's suggestion.
I use " gunmetal gray" instead of black on my Gammil, which was recommended by my dealer years ago. Always looks nice.
I had my "black" setting triangles quilted in bright colors of variegated thread. The judge loved it and the audience gave it first place.
I would quilt around the triangles and straight line the bigger black part. I like your quilt a lot.
Might I suggest orange peel type quilting for your triangles and then something flowing diagonally in the black. I think I'd use red thread if I wanted the quilting to show up. It's not so bright that it will 'take over'. If you want more of a neutral, I like your idea of the gray. I would make sure you could see it on the black, tho.
I've been disappointed before when some lovely quilting didn't show up because I used totally matching thread. It's how we learn! |
thank you all for such a valuable advice that you gave me, for the moment I have ordered 'charcoal' thread since the black is not quite solid black, it should work. I am not stressing too much over this since it is for a boy and I know that he will not mind how it will be quilted, it is more for myself.
thank you, again |
Have a black quilt which I quilted butterflies in gold thread in alternate blocks. The butterflies sing on that quilt!
to gain that triangle motif from your half sq. triangles in the black, how about dividing into big triangles and using straight lines to stitch several triangles inside themselves. Glad you nixed idea of variegated--it gives you other designs but without you really having control. I like the idea of orange peels in the half-sq. triangles.
Very nice!
Terrific quilt - I like the black on black idea for your thread - that keeps it simple, and the design is what will shine.
That is a really pretty quilt. I made one using those colors that was a Craftsy kit called Night Stars. The colors look very similar and it too had a black background. I had it long-arm quilted and we used a bright neon green color with a star pattern. It turned out beautiful! I loved the neon and the bright green really made the quilting show up well on the black especially. You might make a small quilt sandwich with some scraps and try the neon green. I think you would really like it. Good luck with your finish!

Love your quilt and would love to see it finished. I love the way the color pop off the black.
I did this quilt some years back and my LAQer used varigated thread. The back of the quilt is Black batik and the thread color was purple. I just love the movement of the quilting pattern. |
thank you all for your suggestions, for the moment I am waiting for the backing fabric. I got the charcoal thread, and I did try it on a small sample and I do not like it, so either it will be black, that I a still need to purchase (anyone would like a cone of charcoal threads?), or will give it a try with a variegated thread. I wish that I had a local place to buy it. will wait until we do some travel to stop at Q stores.

How about SITD a 1/4" on each side of all the black seams to mirror the triangles and SITD on the coloured ones?
I would use variegated on the black ones if you don't care for the charcoal and a lighter weight thread that would you aren't going to notice on the coloured ones. From experience the black on black is not going to show up very well so if it's important that the quilting show, you may want to take that into consideration. Just depends what look you're after.
