Quilt of Memories--a T-shirt quilt

3 Attachment(s)
I'd been saving T-shirts with the thought of "someday" making a T-shirt quilt for myself. Several years ago, my DD took them home, saying she was tired of seeing them in my sewing room and that she would make it for me. This is what she presented me with for Mother's Day. It is so much nicer than anything I would have made.

She added patches from my flying, rallying and younger DD's high school marching band days. She included blocks from her's, her sister's and my colleges. She even put in blocks of the Chicago Blackhawks and my Porsche interests. My brothers' and son-in-law's midget racing teams are included. I've attached some close-ups of these special blocks.

What a lovely thing for her to do! It really turned out nice. You must have saved a bazillion t-shirts!

I love t-shirt quilts. My goal is make one for all of brothers and sisters. We are "t-shirt wearers" so they have been told to save at least 6 to 9 of their favorites and I will try to make each a quilt. GREAT JOB ON YOUR QUILT.

I agree. I love seeing what different people do with their t-shirt quilts. I have a box of my grandson's shirts waiting to be made up!

gramajo 06-12-2012 10:19 AM

PamS Yes I had about a gazillion T-shirts. I'd love to have added more, but the quilt would've been huge. It's already 68" x 76"--perfect size for a nap quilt for me.

new2q My family are also T-shirt wearers. What a nice idea for you to offer to make quilts for all of them.

Thank you all for your great comments. I am so proud of DD; she is very creative and comes up with lots of imaginative ideas for both her quilts and mine. She always has great ideas to help me make my quilts unique. She's on this board, so she'll see all your comments.

She came up with her own design. I don't know how she put it together. Her design is MUCH better than I would have come up with. BTW she did not stabilize the T-shirts. She found somewhere online how to do it without stabilizing. Maybe, when she reads this, she'll put a link up.

I am very proud of her AND very impressed with her talent. I'd say that even if she weren't my kid. :) Her work is impressive.

Just got a computer back, so I can go online again. Mine died; DD brought over her old one & hooked it up for me. I was having withdrawals not being able to connect with QB to keep up with all of you.

sash: she used the book "How to Make a Too Cool T-shirt Quilt" by Andrea T. Funk. I believe she found it online. The design is based on a 4" grid so you're able to use different sized blocks. It sounds as if laying it out takes some time, but the results are definitely worth it. DD is very awesome & I am very lucky to have her.
