This quilt is for my brother Patrick and sister-in-law Mary Ann. Mary Ann's mother Pat died last year at the age of 89. Earlier this year we sorted through loads of material, and I promised to make them a quilt.

This is the end result. Pat loved green, so with her material and some of mine, it turned into a quilt that is definitely in her colours. I didn't have to buy any material. Fortunately there were yards of the background material, but by the time I got to the border, which is mainly material from my stash, I was beginning to run out of the right colours, so the quilt is a fraction smaller than I would have liked.

The house blocks are big enough for nine to fit the top of a double bed. The hedges were a brainwave, the best way I could think of to make the quilt longer, because it was already wide enough, and sashings just weren't going to work.

To my English eyes, this quilt has turned out looking very American, which is entirely fitting because Pat was from Wisconsin. She left America in the late 1940s, but still went back to visit family when she could until she was in her 80s. Some of the material in the quilt, judging by the selvedges, must have been bought in the States.

And she never lost her accent. I can still hear her.

I'm saving the quilt so Patrick and Mary Ann can have it for Christmas. The chances of them finding it on this website are four zillion to one.

I'm also posting this quilt on the thread "Quilts made on Vintage Machines" - there are some lovely quilts there if you haven't seen them already.

What a beautiful quilt for them to remember her by, you did a lovely job! We in Wisconsin do not think we have an accent...haha. From Nancy in Wisconsin.

It is so gorgeous. Then to know that it is the Great grandmother's fabric makes it even more special. Then add it that your kindness in making the quilt. It is a treasure

A very sweet quilt. The houses are adorable. That is a nice rememberance to give to them.

Hedges were a really nice touch. They act as an anchor for the houses.
